Rangers fall to CCU in Saturday doubleheader, aim for series split on Sunday

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team suffered a pair of tough losses on Saturday in its doubleheader against Colorado Christian University, falling by finals of 10-3 and 7-6 to the neighboring Cougars.

Regis (27-18 overall, 18-9 RMAC), which tied the program record for longest win streak on Friday when the team notched its 13th straight victory, lost their first games since April 2 on the road against No. 5 ranked Colorado Mesa University.

CCU (13-30-1 overall, 9-18 RMAC) will take a 2-1 series lead into Sunday's finale, scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.

GAME ONE: Colorado Christian was able to take the first game on Saturday following a strong start from pitcher Robby Caro, who was able to keep a powerful Rangers' offense hitless through the game's first six innings.

The Cougars build a 6-0 lead in the top of the third on a pair of home runs and a RBI double. Regis countered with one run in the home-half of the inning when junior Cam Dalrymple walked, moved to second on a ground out, stole third and scored on the sacrifice fly by senior Austin Vaught.

In the seventh, the Rangers were able to break up the no-hitter on a rocket single by sophomore Maxim Fullerton that glanced off the CCU first baseman's glove, and a double to center by senior first baseman Matt Marlow to open the frame.

Sophomore utility man CJ Difiglia, who got the start at third base, drove in Fullerton with a sacrifice fly and junior outfielder Levi Padilla also notched a sacrifice fly to round out the Rangers' scoring.

Out of the bullpen, sophomore Colton Wuelfing (0.1IP), senior Luke Luebker (0.2IP), and sophomore Cam Bushnell (0.1IP) each delivered scoreless relief appearances.

GAME TWO: The Rangers were able to get off to a strong start in Saturday's nightcap, taking a 3-0 lead through the game's first four innings courtesy of a RBI double from sophomore shortstop Zach Daudet and a two-run home run off the bat of junior Adam Paniagua.

After CCU briefly cut the lead to 3-1, the Rangers added three more runs in the sixth inning on a clutch, two-out single into the right-center gap by Vaught that scored three runs with the Regis base runners in motion.

Unfortunately for Regis, Colorado Christian would rally in the top of the seventh to score six runs and take its first lead of the ballgame at 7-6.

The Rangers received a one-out single by Marlow in the seventh to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but were unable to generate a rally and fell by the 7-6 final.

Freshman left-hander Ryan Garcia continued his sensational April with five strong innings of work, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out three in the no-decision.

Junior right-hander Logan Deskin, called on in a bases loaded no out situation in the sixth, was able to get out of the jam unscathed to preserve a 3-1 lead at the time.

UP NEXT: Regis will conclude the home portion of the regular season and go hunting for a series split when the two teams play Game Four on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. to allow student-athletes the opportunity to be a part of the Regis University commencement ceremony that morning.
Following Sunday's game, the Regis baseball program will honor its eight graduating seniors and graduate students with a Senior Day ceremony.
