Rangers fall to CCU in home finale, honor senior class postgame on Sunday

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team concluded the home portion of its 2023 schedule on Sunday, falling by a 13-8 final to Colorado Christian University in the series finale.

Regis (27-19 overall, 18-10 RMAC) would out-hit the Cougars (14-30-1 overall, 10-18 RMAC), 14-10, but and early deficit and 15 runners left on base would prove costly as CCU was able to hold on for the 3-1 series win.

"I thought CCU played really well all weekend and we didn't play well. It really came down to that. We ran into some jams, then hit into some double plays and didn't capitalize with runners in scoring position when we had opportunities," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "That's baseball sometimes and it can happen. But we need to take this weekend as a learning opportunity for us that we need to get back to doing the things we do well and get some things ironed out before playoffs."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado Christian was able to get off to a fast start on Sunday, scoring two runs in the top of the first and then exploding for seven runs in the top of the third to go up 9-0.

Regis would respond with four runs of its own in the bottom of the third, getting three RBI singles from senior Matt Marlow, sophomore Maxim Fullerton and senior Austin Vaught in the inning before redshirt senior designated hitter Cam Blossom drove in a fourth run on a hit-by-pitch.

CCU haulted the Rangers' momentum with three runs in the top of the fourth to make it a 12-4 ballgame.

Regis plated a run in the sixth on an RBI double from senior third baseman Colten Chase, who was a team-best 4-for-5 with three driven in Sunday and also set the program stolen base record with a steal of third later in the inning.

Chase passed former Regis great Etienne Materre (58-for-70) for the stolen base crown as he now has 59 bags (59-for-67) in 144 career games played.

"I'm happy for Colten to get the record and really happy about the overall day he had at the plate," LaComb said. "We're very proud of him, what he's been able to accomplish, and of the young man he is now after being with our program for five years."

Regis tacked on another run in the eight on a RBI single from junior outfielder Levi Padilla to inch within six at 12-6, and plated two more runs in the ninth on a bullet up the middle by Chase, but were unable to complete a comeback.

Marlow (3-for-6, 2R, RBI), sophomore outfielder CJ Difiglia (2-for-5, 2R) and senior utility man Austin Vaught (2-for-3, RBI) all joined Chase and Fullerton with multi-hit games for the Regis lineup on Sunday, as well.

On the mound, junior right-hander Logan Deskin added to his strong weekend with two no-hit innings of relief, striking out three, while senior right-hander Michael May tossed a scoreless eighth in his final home game as a Ranger.

May was one of eight graduating seniors and graduate students the program honored following Sunday's game, joined by Chase, Vaught, Blossom, Patrick Kennedy, Zach Harstad, Luke Luebker and Porter Hardcastle.

"This senior class has been through a lot in our program in terms of dealing with the Covid-19 Pandemic, transitioning the culture of the program, and this group is very special to me," LaComb said of his seniors. "They helped create some of the biggest change and progress. I'm really proud of them and know they'll continue to do great things in life."

UP NEXT: The Rangers, currently defending the No. 3 seed for the RMAC Tournament scheduled to begin May 10th out in Grand Junction, will conclude the regular season next weekend on the road against Colorado State University Pueblo. CSU Pueblo and Colorado School of Mines are currently tied for fourth place in the RMAC standings with 14-14 conference records.

Game One of the series against the ThunderWolves is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday out at Rawlings Field.

"Going into the Pueblo series, we know we need to clean some things up and just focus on us. The results will take care of themselves," LaComb said. "Our goal next week is to play better baseball and get some momentum going into the postseason."
