Wuelfing earns first collegiate win, Rangers pounce on UCCS early to complete series sweep

DENVER, Colo. — For the second straight spring, the Regis University baseball team was able to complete a regular season sweep of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, rolling to a 12-5 victory in Game Four of the series on Saturday at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.

The series sweep has vaulted Regis (18-16 overall, 9-7 RMAC) into fourth place in the RMAC standings, leapfrogging CSU Pueblo to move to within two games of third-place Colorado School of Mines, while the loss dropped UCCS (13-21 overall, 5-11 RMAC) to seventh in the standings after beginning the week tied with the Rangers.

"It was big for our guys to be able to get those wins, we needed them, so that we have some momentum going into the back-half of this season," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "Overall, it was a really good weekend for our guys. We know there are still some things we need to work on and we know we have another big weekend coming up against Colorado School of Mines so we'll need to get ourselves ready to go."

HOW IT HAPPENED: After briefly falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Rangers created all the separation they would need with a 10-run first inning, bookended by a solo home run from sophomore outfielder Maxim Fullerton and a two-run blast off the bat of senior first baseman Matt Marlow.

Fullerton's moonshot to right-center was his third of the spring, while Marlow's two-run shot — a liner over the 370-mark in left-center — tied him for the team lead with junior outfielder Levi Padilla with four.

The duo each finished with two hits apiece to pace the Regis lineup, bringing Marlow's series totals to 11-for-16, 5 runs, 7 RBI and two home runs across the four games.

Marlow currently leads all RMAC hitters with a video game-esk .488 batting average and is now just two RBI shy of the school record (162 RBI) held by the trio of Nick Doran, Andrew Newton and Dan Kozloski.

"Matt has a really good approach, a really good plan. He has great zone discipline and is always on time. He does all the things right that are hard about hitting," LaComb said. "That's why he is such a good hitter and a pure hitter. He's flat hard to get out and we're happy to have him on our team."

In between the two homers, Regis received a two-run single from sophomore outfielder CJ Difiglia, a RBI infield single by Fullerton, and two runs courtesy of UCCS wild pitches and a passed ball as Regis sent a total of 13 batters to the plate in the inning.

Regis would add a RBI single in the second inning by catcher Austin Hamilton to balloon its lead to 11-1 before turning matters over to the Rangers' bullpen the rest of the way.

In a designated bullpen game, the Rangers used 11 different pitchers to get their 27 outs. Sophomore right-hander Colton Wuelfing picked up his first collegiate win after drawing his second straight start. He'd go two solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out two.

"The biggest thing about Colton is I know he's going to come in, throw strikes, and keep hitters off-balance," LaComb said. "That's why we've put him in that Game Four starter role the last two weekends and he's done a great job for us. He gave us a quality two innings."

Regis would receive scoreless relief appearance from Luke Luebker, Zach Harstad, Logan Deskin, Dom Ramil, Michael May, Brady Gilmore and a 1-2-3 ninth from Ethan Sloan to slam the door on the 12-5 final.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis outscored UCCS, 38-18, over the four games
  • Freshman Jack Moulin and junior Reagan Guthrie each added pinch hit singles off the bench
  • Defensively, Regis committed just two errors for the series
UP NEXT: The Rangers will look to carry the momentum into next weekend's four-game road series against Colorado School of Mines in a battle for third place in the RMAC standings. It kicks off an eight-game road stand for Regis as the team is also slated to head south to face New Mexico Highlands University April 21-23 before returning home for senior weekend against Colorado Christian (April 28-30).

Game One between the Rangers and Orediggers is set for 6 p.m. Friday, April 14th out in Golden.
