Rangers fall to Grand Valley State in Midwest Regional semi-final

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 7 ranked and top-seeded Regis University women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a tough second quarter on Friday, falling by a 15-11 final to No. 4 seed Grand Valley State University in the semi-final of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.

Friday's game was a rematch between Regis and the Lakers (15-4 overall) of last year's NCAA regional round and the win advances GVSU to Sunday's Midwest Region final against No. 2 seed University of Indianapolis.

The Rangers, coming off their fourth straight RMAC regular season and tournament championships, will end their 2023 season with a 17-2 overall record.
"I'm extremely proud of this team. They support each other, they love each other and they've grown so much and gave everything they had (Friday)," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis was able to get off to a strong start on Friday, rattling off three straight goals to go up 3-1 and enjoyed a 4-3 lead at the end of the first 15 minutes after junior attacker Tia Krats scored with 1:03 remaining in the quarter.

Grand Valley State countered by switching goalkeepers to begin the second quarter, bringing in true freshman Sarah Krause. Krause was able to limit the Rangers to just two goals in the second quarter, while the GVSU offense found traction with six goals — two being a woman-up — to take a 9-6 lead into halftime.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, they would be unable to gain much traction in the third as GVSU won the quarter, 3-1, and led 15-8 with 5:24 remaining in the fourth.

Regis tried to make one final push as it scored the final three goals of the fourth, pulling back within 15-11 with 2:17 remaining, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Senior midfielder Bailey Truex led all Rangers with four goals, giving her a team-high 54 scores for the 2023 season.

Sophomore midfielder Madeline Schallmoser and freshman midfielder Shea Murphy followed with two goals, while the trio of Krats, graduate student Lucy Johnson and junior midfielder Lily Ferguson each added one goal apiece.

Schallmoser would pace all Rangers with four ground balls, while Truex led the draw control area with seven against a GVSU draw unit that entered the day leading the country in that category.

Defensively, graduate student defenseman Maya Quigley and Schallmoser each forced three turnovers and sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch ended the afternoon with six saves.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis edged Grand Valley State in shot attempts, 26-24.
  • The Rangers also won the turnover battled (19-18) and draw controls (17-13)
  • Krause made six saves on seven shot attempts for GVSU in the third quarter. She finished the game with 10 saves in three quarters.
UP NEXT: Grand Valley advances to Sunday's Midwest Region title game against No. 2 seed UIndy. First draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver.

The Rangers, who are due to return 18 or more players from the 2023 squad, will say goodbye to some major impact players in the offseason while also turning their attention toward the 2023-24 season and a quest for a fifth straight RMAC title.

"We want to continue to build every day and every year. But I think the takeaway from this year is the united front we put together. Every day was just so special," Kellner said. "We didn't get the result we wanted (Friday), but I can proudly say we got other results throughout the year that we wanted. We grew as people, grew as a team, and have so much love for one another."
