Rangers get off to strong start, but fall by 79-61 final to No. 16 Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Regis University men's basketball team hung tough with the No. 16 ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Friday, tipping off a back-to-back weekend road trip against area rivals.

But unfortunately for the Rangers (8-8 overall, 5-5 RMAC), they were unable to keep pace with the high-powered Orediggers (15-3 overall, 9-1 RMAC) in the second half, falling by a 79-61 final inside Lockridge Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Defense dominated early on Friday as Regis inched its way to a 6-2 lead at the first media timeout and led by as many as seven points at 11-4 following a 3-pointer from freshman guard Ty Cox at the 13:27 mark.

The Orediggers' offense was able to find their footing, though, responding with a 14-1 run over the next five minutes and change to build an 18-12 cushion.

Colorado School of Mines would maintain that 2-3 possession lead as it entered halftime up 37-30 despite the Rangers limiting the Orediggers to 2-of-8 shooting behind the 3-point line.

Mines' junior Adam Krasovec proved to be the wildcard for the Orediggers early on as the 6'10 stretch forward scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half coming off the bench.

Regis would climb back within five at the 16:06 mark when graduate student forward Tarig Eisa was able to get a contested layup through traffic to drop.

But that would be as close as the Rangers would get over the final 20 minutes as the offense finished the second half at a 38 percent (11-for-29) clip and 36.7% (22-for-60) mark from the floor for the evening.

As for the Orediggers, they shot an even 50 percent from the field (34-for-68) while doing the bulk of their damage inside the 3-point arc as CSM outscored Regis, 56-32, in the painted area.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis had three players finish in double-figures, led by sophomore guard Chase Mayo Harmon with 13 points.
  • Redshirt junior guard Eddy Egun added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds, while freshman guard Jalen Brown contributed 12 points off the bench.
  • Regis, the second best free-throw shooting team in the RMAC at 75%, had an uncharacteristic evening at the line as the team finished 12-for-20 (60%) from the stripe.
UP NEXT
The Rangers will look to bounce back Saturday when they travel across town to square off against MSU Denver (10-5 overall, 4-5 RMAC) inside Auraria Event Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
