Box Score Denver, Colo. - In a dominant attacking effort on their home turf, the Regis University men's soccer team beat Westminster University (Utah) 3-0 on Sunday. The Rangers now claim a winning record, advancing to 3-2-5 (2-0-0 RMAC), while the Griffins move to 4-3-2 (0-2-0 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers set the place of play offensively, leading the Griffins in shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks. The home team drew first blood as Elias Taubo scored in the fifteenth minute on an assist from Liam Corr. Taubo expanded the Rangers' lead with an own goal in the 69th minute.
The duo of Taubo and Corr add to an already impressive weekend after recording 4 and 5 points respectively in Thursday's 4-2 victory over Colorado Mesa University. Corr assisted Taubo at 61:52, and Taubo returned the favor in short order, dishing out his second helper of the game at 72:03.
"I think his work in possession and out of possession is really, really quality. Obviously, he's finding his way in the box and scoring goals and getting assists. Not only leadership-wise but playing-wise he's in really, really good form, right now," head coach Taylor Diem said of Taubo.
Freshman Jack Shimkus sealed the Ranger victory in the 80th minute, tallying his first Regis goal off an assist from fellow first-year Blaise Richard. The Rangers responded to a 0-2 loss to the Griffins just last Sunday by controlling the ball and limiting their opponent's opportunities with consistent defense.
This week it was all about not giving away anything too early and then trying to find opportunities to score early so we could open them up a little bit and have more space to play. We're really happy with scoring three goals today, but even more than that, keeping a clean sheet and limiting the chances they had in our half," Diem said.
GAME NOTES
The Rangers took 14 shots to the Griffins' 6.
Greg Squire played 90 minutes in net for the Rangers in the shutout, recording two saves.
