Rangers drop Saturday doubleheader to Pitt State, hunt series split on Sunday

PITTSBURG, Kansas — The Regis University baseball team struggled to get the bats going during Saturday's road doubleheader against Pittsburg State, falling by final scores of 8-0 and 2-1 in extra innings.

Regis (3-3-1 overall) will hunt a series split against the Gorillas (5-2 overall) when the two teams square off again Sunday in the finale, scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. Mountain Time.

"Tough day to score runs for us, offensively. We received some really good pitching performances throughout the day, especially in Game Two. We just didn't capitalize on the opportunities we had to score and Pittsburg State did," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "But that's baseball and we'll come back ready tomorrow looking to split the series."

GAME ONE RECAP
In Saturday's opener, Pittsburg State took advantage of two big innings as it scored four runs in the first inning and added four insurance runs in the fourth en route to the 8-0 final.

Regis received a pair of scoreless relief appearances from senior right-hander Logan Deskin and freshman Carson Gantz in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.

At the plate, the Rangers produced six hits, three of which were doubles, but were unable to string the quality at-bats together.

Junior catcher/DH Adam Paniagua continued his torrid start to the spring, finishing 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. He is currently 6-for-9 with five extra-base hits and two home runs in the series heading into Sunday's finale.

GAME TWO RECAP
Saturday's nightcap was a classic pitching duel as the two teams combined for just three runs on 11 hits and needed extra innings to settle things.

Pittsburg State got on the scoreboard first in the second inning with a RBI single; the lone run allowed by Regis sophomore left-hander Ryan Garcia, who received a no-decision Saturday after allowing just four hits and striking out four in his 4.0 innings of work.

The Rangers' offense pushed across the equalizer in the top of the fourth as junior CJ Difiglia earned a leadoff walk, moved to scoring position on another walk issued to Paniagua, and scored two batters later on the RBI groundout from junior Mattias Sessing.

Regis and Pittsburg State remained deadlocked at 1-1, largely because of the relief effort from Regis junior Lucas Watson, who struck out seven and allowed only two hits in his 3.2 innings.

Unfortunately for the Rangers and Watson, a one-out single and two-out hit batsman cracked the door open for the Gorillas, who pushed across the game-winning run on a RBI walk two batters later to steal the 2-1 final.

Offensively, Regis finished the afternoon with one run on five hits and were led by senior first baseman Peter Goldy (2-for-3). Rounding out the Rangers that hit safely in Game Two were Difiglia, Paniagua and redshirt freshman Aaron Kidd, who's fifth-inning single was the first base hit of his collegiate career.
