Trio of Regis pitchers put clamps on Pitt State, but Rangers fall 1-0 in series finale

PITTSBURG, Kansas — Runs were a premium on Sunday in Game Four of the Regis University baseball team's road series against Pittsburg State as just one unearned run in the first inning would prove to be the difference.

Unfortunately for the Rangers and their pitching staff, Regis came up on the short end of another tremendous pitchers' duel as the team fell 1-0 to the Gorillas. With the win, the Gorillas (6-2 overall) earned a 3-1 series victory while the loss drop Regis to 3-4-1 overall on the spring.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After two quick groundouts to begin the bottom of the first inning, the Gorillas were able to put a scoring threat together after an error extended the inning.

Pitt State would take full advantage as the runner stole second base to get in scoring position and came home two batters later on a RBI single for the game's only run.

That run would be the lone blemish against Regis starting pitcher Luke Douthitt, who went five strong innings in just his second start since the 2022 season. Douthitt limited PSU to the one unearned run on three hits, walked just one and struck out four in his tough-luck loss.

Regis then received two dominate innings from junior left-hander Griffin Bruder as he struck out three and allowed just one hit before giving way to junior right-hander Matt Anderson, who worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Sunday's performance marked back-to-back tremendous performances for the Regis pitching staff as the duo of Ryan Garcia and Lucas Watson held PSU to just two runs on six hits in a 2-1 loss in Saturday's Game Three.

As for the Gorillas' staff, Pittsburg State used four different pitchers to get its 27 outs, limiting the Rangers offense to six singles.

Regis threatened with runners on first and third with one out in the third, and put two men on again in the top of the ninth with just one out, but were unable to deliver the timely hit to push across the equalizer.

Junior outfielder CJ Difiglia (2-for-4) and junior infielder Garrett Rede (2-for-3) paced the Regis lineup. Fellow junior infielders Tanner Rice and Clayton Conn recorded the other two base hits for the Rangers on Sunday.

UP NEXT
Regis will head home for a few days to rest and recover before heading back to Kansas next weekend to play a total of four games at the Washburn Classic. The Rangers begin the weekend against Minot State. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. (Mountain Time) out in Topeka.
