Zsidisin delivers gem, Rangers knock off Minot State in home opener

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team opened its 2024 home schedule on Friday, braving the incoming stormfront to earn a 5-3 victory over Minot State University.

Junior right-hander Wyatt Zsidisin tossed six strong innings, racking up a season-high seven strikeouts, and was a major bright spot for Regis (4-4-1 overall) on a day where the temperatures barely creeped into the 30's and the game was initially delayed due to a snow dusting Thursday evening.

"I'm really proud of our guys. We were at here shoveling snow and clearing the field at 7 a.m. and, to be honest, we weren't sure we'd get this game in. But it speaks to the character of our team," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "Wyatt gave us a great start, we played good defense behind him, and then started putting together better at-bats as the game went along to string together some team offense."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Minot State (0-1 overall) grabbed a brief lead in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a stolen base and a two-out RBI single to plate the game's first run.

That would be one of the few opportunities relinquished on the afternoon by Zsidisin as the junior right-hander commanded the next five innings, allowing just one unearned run and scattering four hits the rest of the way en route to earning his second victory of 2024.

"I think Minot State is a very good offensive club and I thought the big thing for Wyatt (Friday) was that he was able to work ahead in counts, which is something we're really trying to preach to our pitching staff," Jolley said. "Wyatt really controlled Strike One. And then he was able to mix in two or three different pitches for strikes with a little bit of velocity behind it."

With Zsidisin dealing on the mound, the Regis offense got after MSU starting pitcher Craig Schmich the second time through the lineup as the Rangers pushed across two runs in the third to take a 2-1 advantage.

Junior shortstop Clayton Conn began the rally with a leadoff single and advanced into scoring position on a throwing error, stole third base and then scored on a wild pitch to get Regis on the scoreboard.

With two outs and runners on first and second, junior catcher Adam Paniagua delivered a sharp single through the left side of the infield to bring home fellow junior CJ Difiglia for the Rangers' second run.

"Minot State's starting pitcher was doing a good job mixing a couple different pitches for strikes the first time through the order," Jolley said. "But I thought our guys did a good job just moving forward, letting those first at-bats go, and started making small adjustments at the plate. I thought out approaches got a lot better as the game went on."

After Minot State tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth, it was Difiglia's turn to drive in a run as he roped a one-out, RBI single back up the middle to score senior Levi Padilla in the fifth.

Regis would add insurance runs on a sacrifice fly by Padilla in the sixth, and a RBI double by junior Tanner Rice in the eighth, to build a 5-2 lead heading to the ninth.

Minot State threatened, taking advantage of an error, walk and wild pitch to put runners on second and third with no outs. But the threat was defused by Regis senior left-hander Ethan Sloan, who induced a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts, putting a bow on his second save of the spring and solidifying the 5-3 final.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis out-hit the Beavers, 13-6, and had four players notch multi-hit games in Paniagua (2-for-3), senior Peter Goldy (2-for-4), Conn (2-for-4) and Padilla (2-for-4).
  • Junior right-hander Nick Jacobs earned the hold out of the bullpen on Friday as he pitched two clean innings of relief.
  • All nine starters in the Regis batting order recorded at least one hit.
UP NEXT
With more snow in the Denver forecast Friday evening, the Rangers and Beavers are aiming to get a single, nine-inning contest played on Saturday with a tentative first-pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
