Paniagua drives in four, Rangers take a 2-0 series lead with 9-5 win over Minot State

DENVER, Colo. — A Friday night snow flurry did little to slow down the Regis University baseball team as the #ShovelBoys continued to live up to their nickname, clearing the field Saturday morning before earning a 9-5 victory against Minot State University to claim a 2-0 series lead.

The Rangers (5-4-1 overall) received another quality outing on the mound, this time courtesy of junior Mason Ashcraft, and received timely team offense en route to guaranteeing themselves no worse than a series split as the two teams head into Game Three (1 p.m. Sunday) and Game Four (11 a.m. Monday).

"I thought it was another huge performance from our guys. We were back out here this morning shoveling snow and probably even had less of a pregame than we did (Friday). It was a little more show and go, but I thought we had a really gritty performance," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "Being able to take a 2-0 lead in the series was big for us and hopefully gives us some energy going into these final two games as we look to win a series."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis excelled at maximizing its opportunities with productive outs on Saturday, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton and a RBI groundout from second baseman Tanner Rice.

Rice would add two sacrifice flies of his own Saturday to drive in three total runs (0-for-2, 3 RBI) while the Rangers as a team produce five of their nine runs without the benefit of a hit.

"I thought today was a good example of what we preach as an offense. You have to be the offense you need to be that day to win a ballgame. We had guys doing whatever was asked of them or whatever it took to win a ballgame," Jolley said. "We want to have an identity that's tough to beat because we're willing to play whatever type of game we need to play. We were able to add on and move runners throughout the game. And then we had Adam come up with a couple big hits for us."

Junior designated hitter Adam Paniagua continued to be a menace to opposing pitchers, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and a game-high four RBI as he roped two-run singles in the second inning, and again in the eighth inning, that gave Regis a 9-4 cushion heading to the ninth.

While the Regis offense was prodding the Minot State staff, Ashcraft delivered his best start of 2024 as he tossed five strong innings, allowing just three runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out five.

Facing a bases loaded jam in the fifth, the Regis right-hander capped his day by inducing a 6-3, inning-ending double play turned by shortstop Clayton Conn to keep it a 6-3 ballgame at the time.

"I thought the biggest thing for Mason was trusting his stuff. He has a good fastball with movement and sometimes, when he tries to do a little too much with it, it can get erratic in the strike zone. But I thought he did a much better job today with fastball command," Jolley said. "And because the fastball was in the strike zone more, he has good secondary pitches that he was able to utilize effectively off that."

The Regis bullpen then used three arms to get the final 12 outs as junior left-hander Riley Phelan (1.2IP, 3H, 1R, 0 ER), freshman righty Carson Gantz (1.1IP, 0H, 0R, 2K) and junior right-hander Trevor Moeck (1.0IP, 0H, 1R, 2Ks) closed the door on the 9-5 final.

GAME NOTES
  • Junior left fielder Mattias Sessing finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored from the leadoff spot.
  • Fellow junior CJ Difiglia was a spotless 2-for-2, BB, HBP and four runs scored batting out of the No. 2 spot.
  • Regis pitching finished with nine strikeouts on Saturday, giving them 19 strikeouts versus just six walks through two games of this series as a staff.

UP NEXT
Regis will look to secure the series win on Sunday when the Rangers and Beavers square off again for nine innings. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field.
