Fullerton three-run double turns the tide, Rangers rout Beavers, 18-8, in series finale

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team continued to show its grit, shaking off a tough loss Sunday, and overcoming early deficits in Monday's series finale against Minot State, en route to a rewarding 18-8 victory that clinched a 3-1 series win for the Rangers.

Regis (6-5-1 overall) moved back above .500 with the victory and provided a satisfying exclamation point to a home-opening series against the Beavers (1-3) that saw the Rangers trudge through numerous snow flurries, a 20-5 loss Sunday, and four early errors in Monday's ballgame.

"I thought our guys did a great job coming out (Monday) ready to play hard and battle, especially after yesterday's game," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "We obviously still have some things we want to clean up, but we have a group of guys who play hard and are not afraid of being down. And that's a good trait that good teams tend to have. It was a long week and long series with all the field work we had to do on top of the four games so it was well earned."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 7-4 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, hampered by a couple fielding miscues that contributed five unearned runs to the Beavers' total, the Rangers were able to get squarely back in the ballgame courtesy of a three-run, bases clearing double off the bat of junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton.

Fullerton, who came into the ballgame as a defensive replacement, roped the two-out, bases loaded double into the right-center field gap to bring Regis back even at 7-7.

"I think Maxim's at-bat was the biggest moment in the game. He is still looking to find his groove in the early going, he sat yesterday's ballgame, and then came into the game due to an injury today. But credit to Max because he stayed ready," Jolley said. "He battled through that at-bat and ended up coming up with a huge hit that hopefully springboards him moving forward."

Regis would continue to two-out magic, adding three more runs in the fourth inning on a RBI walk from second baseman Wes Miller and a two-run single off the bat of outfielder Mattias Sessing.

On the mound, freshman right-hander Carson Gantz then stepped up to give 2.1 dazzling, no-hit innings of relief en route to picking up his first collegiate victory.

Gantz, who came in to get the Rangers out of a jam in the top of the fourth, allowed just one walk and struck out two to stabilize things and allow the Regis offense to add insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, bumping the lead to 12-7. The freshman has now gone 4.2 scoreless innings and has allowed just one hit across three relief appearances to begin his career.

"This was the second big outing of the series for Gantz and he was good for us last weekend against Pitt State. He is very mature, very competitive and he does a heck of a job throwing quality strikes with a couple different pitches," Jolley said. "Already in a short amount of time, he is becoming one of our most trusted guys where we're not afraid to use him in big situations."

Regis would then put the game away with a six-run seventh that included an RBI single from Sessing, a RBI walk by Difiglia, and capped by a moonshot grand slam to left off the bat of junior Adam Paniagua.

Paniagua finished 2-for-3 with the four RBI on Monday and was a blistering 7-for-11 with two homers and 11 RBI during the four-game series. He currently leads all RMAC hitters with a .526 batting average and is tied for the RMAC lead in home runs (4).

"So far, though our first 12 games, what else can you say about the kid? He has been unbelievable," Jolley said. "He works incredibly hard, in an unbelievable human being, and then has a very good skill set. He's as strong as an ox, his barrel stays in the hitting zone which allows him to do a lot of things."

GAME NOTES
  • The Regis bullpen also received scoreless innings with one strikeout Monday from junior left-hander Griffin Bruder and junior righty Matt Anderson.
  • Sessing reached base five times from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with a pair of walks, two runs scored and three RBI.
  • Getting a second start at the designated hitter position, senior Dakari Armendariz posted his first multi-hit game of the spring (2-for-4, 2R, 2RBI).
  • Regis shortstop Clayton Conn was the fourth Ranger to collect a multi-hit game Monday, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and 2 RBI.
  • The Rangers produced 18 runs on 15 hits while outscoring the Beavers, 14-4, over the final five innings.
UP NEXT
The Rangers will look to build off the series win as they prepare for another challenging home stand this weekend against perennial powers, Augustana University. Game One of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday in Denver.
Augustana won the NSIC regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series in 2023. The Vikings begins the 2024 ranked No. 10 in the NCBWA Poll.
"Augustana is a program with a lot of history, was a World Series team last year and won a National Championship not too long ago, so they're one of the premiere teams in the upper Midwest," Jolley said. "We're going to have our hands full and it's going go be fun to play a team of that caliber here. This will be a big series for our guys to see how we match up. If we're able to go in and compete against them, it sets us up to know we can compete against the best in the RMAC too."
