Regis battery mates Zsidisin and Paniagua help lift Rangers to 5-4 road win over Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kansas — The Regis University baseball team responded well to an impromptu trip to Kansas this week, brought on by snow flurries in the Denver forecast this weekend, as the team opened its four-game series against Pittsburg State — originally scheduled to be played in Denver — with a 5-4 road victory over the Gorillas.

Friday's victory puts Regis (3-1-1 overall) in the driver seat of the series against the high-powered Gorillas (3-2 overall) heading into Saturday's doubleheader as the Rangers look to avenge a 3-1 series loss to PSU out in Pittsburg last spring.

"I thought we pitched and competed very well on Friday. We got a great, bounce-back start from Wyatt Zsidisin where he was able to get deep into the game before handing off to the bullpen," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "Offensively, we were able to make our hits count. Adam Paniagua had two home runs that were big for us to help extend leads, which become even more crucial in a 5-4 game."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers captured the early momentum Friday as they pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning, courtesy of a RBI double off the bat of junior CJ Difiglia and a run-scoring groundout by Mattias Sessing.

Right-hander Wyatt Zsidisin, making just his second start in a Regis uniform, helped the Rangers maintain that advantage as he threw a strong 5.2 innings, limiting Pittsburg State to just two runs on six hits while striking out three en route to picking up his first win of 2024.

As Zsidisin held the Gorillas' offense at bay, Regis tacked on a crucial insurance run in the third inning on a solo home run by junior Adam Paniagua; his first of two solo home runs on the afternoon. The Regis catcher finished 2-for-3 with the two runs scored, two RBI and a walk.

Paniagua launched his second missile to left field with one out in the eighth inning. Fellow junior Maxim Fullerton would follow with a double to right and scored two batters later on a RBI single from junior infielder Tanner Rice. Rice's run-scoring single pushed the Rangers' lead to 5-2 at the time and proved to be Friday's game-winning run.

Junior right-hander Nick Jacobs relieved Zsidisin in the sixth inning and tossed 1.1 innings of no-hit relief before giving way to Regis senior left-hander Ethan Sloan (2.0 IP, 2R, 1H, 2BB, 3 KS).

Sloan, the Rangers' 2023 strikeout leader out of the bullpen, worked himself into a bit of a jam in the ninth inning, but was able to slam the door on the 5-4 final and pick up his first save of 2024.

Joining Paniagua with multi-hit efforts on Friday were Rice (2-for-3, 1RBI) and senior first baseman Peter Goldy (2-for-4) as Regis out-hit the Gorillas, 9-5.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will look to build off Friday's performance when the two teams square off again Saturday for a pair of seven-inning contests. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. Mountain Time.
