Paniagua homers five times, Rangers take two during Sunday's tripleheader at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Facing the unique and difficult challenge of three games in one day, the Regis University baseball team rose to the occasion as the Rangers took two of the three games during Sunday's tripleheader against Adams State University to secure the team's first RMAC series win of 2024.

Regis (11-8-1 overall, 3-1 RMAC) won Sunday's opening game, 12-5. And after losing a tough 8-6 final, the Rangers bounced back to take the nightcap, 23-10, in emphatic fashion.

"I thought our guys did a really good job of handling some of the adversity that came our way this weekend. We played pretty well on Friday before the game was suspended due to five inches of snow. And I was pleased to see how we finished up Saturday knowing what we were going to face with three games today," said Regis head coach, Pat Jolley. "We went out there and competed, played hard and good things happened for us."

GAME ONE | 12-5 Win
In the first game of the day, the Rangers were able to take control early as they plated two runs in the top of the first inning and popped off for a five-run third to take a comfortable 7-2 lead.

Junior catcher Adam Paniagua and junior designated hitter Matt Graf helped lead the charge as the duo each collected two hits and drove in 3 RBI apiece batting out of the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the batting order, respectively.

One of Paniagua's hits was a two-run homer in the fourth inning, extending the Regis lead to 9-2, and the first of five home runs Paniagua would go on to hit on the afternoon.

Senior outfielder Levi Padilla helped set the table, finishing 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and four runs scored.

On the mound, Regis junior right-hander Mason Ashcraft picked up his second win of the spring with six strong innings of work, while freshman right-hander Carson Gantz tossed a perfect 1-2-3 seventh inning to seal the 12-5 final.

GAME TWO | 8-6 Loss
In the second game of the afternoon, it was Adams State that would get off to the strong start as the Grizzlies scored all eight of their runs between the second and fourth innings to take an 8-1 advantage.

Regis would chip away using the long ball as junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton and junior shortstop Clay Conn each launched two-run home runs in the sixth inning, and Paniagua drilled a solo shot in the seventh, but the comeback attempt would fall just shy.

The home run for Conn was his first of 2024 while Fullerton's blast marked his third home run of the spring.

Out of the bullpen, graduate student Caleb Ayers tossed 1.1 scoreless innings and senior Logan Deskin notched a clean fourth inning to help keep the Rangers in the ballgame.

GAME THREE | 23-10 Win
Behind a nine-run second inning, the Rangers took control of the series finale early and never let go as they cruised to a 23-10 victory in eight innings.

Junior second baseman Tanner Rice hit his first home run as a Ranger as part of another five-run fifth inning for the Regis offense while fellow junior Garrett Rede smoked a two-run shot in the sixth inning for his second homer of 2024.

Regis as a team smashed 10 home runs in the series, half those coming off the bat of Paniagua, who put the exclamation point on his incredible series with three home runs, four runs scored and a career-high eight RBI in Sunday's finale.

Paniagua now has nine home runs through the Rangers' first 20 games this spring, more than doubling the four homers he had in 38 games for Regis in 2023. His .449 batting average on the season leads all RMAC players while he ranks inside the conference's top-5 in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage.

"It's fun to sit back and watch what he is doing. He's a super strong kid and does a great job of not trying to create a lot of loft with his swing. He hits a lot of line drives that just backspin out of the ballpark," Jolley said.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will take a brief break from RMAC play as they welcome in a red hot Lubbock Christian team (17-7 overall), winners of nine straight, for a pair of single, nine-inning contests at 1 p.m. this Friday and Saturday. The two games will mark the end of the non-conference schedule for the Rangers.

"We talked at the beginning of the year about how our non-conference schedule was really going to challenge us and give us an idea of how good we are," Jolley said. "Lubbock Christian is a very good opponent, really talented, and we're going to have to be able to answer that challenge. But that's something our guys have continued to do all year long."
