Jacobs' six shutout innings set the tone in 11-6 road win over No. 22 Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas — Mother nature threw one final curveball before the Regis University baseball team's two-game series against No. 22 ranked Lubbock Christian, with wet field conditions Friday morning shifting the venue a second time — the series was originally scheduled to be played in Denver — to Dan Law Field; home of the Texas Tech University Red Raiders.

Regis (12-8-1 overall) responded to its latest challenge, leading by as many as 10 runs in an 11-6 victory on Friday in Game One, snapping a nine-game winning streak for the Chaparrals (17-8 overall).

"Our guys were put in a tough predicament this week due to the weather, with some short practice days, losing a couple home games and instead getting five vans to make the drive out here to face a really good team. We're very excited about how we responded and how we played," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "There's still some things we know we can clean up, but I thought we played very well across the board today."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Getting his first start in a Regis uniform, junior right-hander Nick Jacobs was sensational on Friday as he pitched six shutout innings against a Lubbock Christian squad that entered the afternoon leading the Lone Star Conference in hitting (.344) and runs per game (9.41).

Jacobs, who has shined in a relief role through the Rangers' first 20 games, picked up his team-leading third win of the season after limiting the Chaps to four scattered hits while striking out four, needing just 98 pitches to get through his six innings.

"Nick had a great outing and it was a huge performance for him, personally. He was facing one of the better offenses in the country so for him to go in and pitch a very competitive game was huge for us," Jolley said. "He allowed our offense to put together some different types of scoring opportunities that we were able to take advantage of."

The Regis lineup, which launched 10 home runs during the Adams State series, excelled in the situational hitting opportunities on Friday to generate its 11 runs on 12 hits and seven walks issued by LCU pitching.

Regis pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on a RBI single from second baseman Tanner Rice. The Rangers would add four more runs in the top of the third — collecting RBI singles from Dakari Armendariz and Garrett Rede — before ballooning the lead to 8-0 with another three runs in the fourth.

All of the Rangers' runs came on timely singles, RBI walks or productive outs, until senior outfielder Levi Padilla drilled a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning that put the Rangers out in front, 10-0.

Nine of the 10 Regis starting hitters would record at least one hit on the afternoon. Junior shortstop Clayton Conn paced all hitters going 3-for-6 with three runs scored atop the batting order, while Padilla and junior Adam Paniagua each collected two hits apiece, as well.

"It's a big thing for us to be an offense that doesn't relying on one way of scoring runs. We want to be an offense that score runs and win a game whether the wind is blowing in or out," Jolley said. "You have to be able to execute and do what is needed in various situations and I think we have a lot of guys who can do both as far execute some timely offense or have the power to put up big innings."

Lubbock Christian would be held off the scoreboard until the home-half of the seventh inning, and took advantage of an error in the ninth to plate five unearned runs, to close out the 11-6 final.

Junior right-hander Wyatt Zsidisin made his first relief appearance of the spring and pitched better than his final line indicated, going 3.0 innings and allowing six runs, only one of them earned, on five hits.

UP NEXT
Regis will look to earn a mini two-game sweep of the nationally ranked Chaparrals when the two teams square off again Saturday in a single, nine-inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. (Mountain Time).

"I think this win gives our guys a little extra energy that I think we're going to need (Saturday) because I expect Lubbock Christian to bounce back. They are ranked inside the top-25 for a reason and we fully expect them to see their best effort tomorrow," Jolley said. "I know our guys will be energized and ready to go compete at a high level."
