Rangers pounce for five early runs, but fall by 11-6 final to No. 22 Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Regis University baseball team concluded its Texas road trip on Saturday, falling by an 11-6 final to No. 22 ranked Lubbock Christian University at Dan Law Field; home of the Texas Tech University Red Raiders.

Regis (12-9-1 overall, 3-1 RMAC) and Lubbock Christian (18-8 overall) finish the mini two-game series between South Central Regional foes with a 1-1 split after Regis earned an 11-6 victory of its own on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers got off to a tremendous start on Saturday as they exploded for five runs in the top of the first inning, courtesy of RBI doubles from juniors Adam Paniagua and Maxim Fullerton in front of a 3-run homer off the bat of fellow junior Garrett Rede; his third of 2024.

Lubbock Christian, the top hitting team in Lone Star Conference entering play Saturday, would respond, however, with six runs over the next three innings to take its first lead of the series at 6-5 in the home-half of the third.

Regis chased LCU's starting pitcher after two innings of work, but struggled to get after the Chaparrals' bullpen as the Rangers' offense was limited to one run on seven hits and 15 strikeouts over the final seven innings of play.

Senior left-hander Ethan Sloan worked 4.1 strong innings of relief and kept the Rangers within striking distance at 7-6 entering the late innings. The southpaw scattered eight hits and struck out eight hitters versus just one walk in a season-long 4.1 innings.

Unfortunately for Sloan and the Rangers, four of the five runs charged against him Saturday would be unearned — two unearned runs in the seventh and eighth innings — to provide LCU with the cushion it'd need to hold on for the 11-6 final.

GAME NOTES
  • Freshman righty Carson Gantz and senior righty Logan Deskin each worked 0.2 scoreless innings of relief.
  • Fullerton paced the Regis offense with his first three-hit performance of the spring, finishing 3-for-5 with a run scored and RBI.
  • Three additional Rangers produced multi-hit games on Saturday in leadoff man Clayton Conn (2-for-5), senior outfielder Levi Padilla (2-for-4) and senior first baseman Peter Goldy (2-for-4).
  • Regis had six extra-base hits on Saturday with five doubles and Rede's 3-run home run.
  • With the series split, Regis currently owns a 4-2 series lead against LCU.
UP NEXT
The Rangers are scheduled to resume RMAC play next weekend when they take on crosstown rival MSU Denver. Game One of the series is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Assembly Athletic Complex in Denver.
