Rangers sweep Friday doubleheader to open road series against MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. — Squaring off against crosstown rival Metropolitan State University of Denver, the Regis University baseball team opened the four-game series with a statement, racking up wins of 11-8 and 3-1 on Friday to take a commanding 2-0 series lead.

With the wins, the Rangers (14-9-1 overall, 5-1 RMAC) have won three straight RMAC games and put themselves in a position to earn a road series win over the Roadrunners (13-15 overall, 4-6 RMAC) for the first time since 2017.

"The two games were completely different and needed two different styles of play to win. I'm proud of our guys for coming in and being able to handle any situation and perform the way they did," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley.

GAME ONE | 11-8 WIN
In Friday's opener, each team's offense took turns trading jabs in the early innings as both Regis and MSU Denver produced three runs in the first and two runs in the third to sit deadlocked at 5-5 a third of the way through the ballgame.

Trailing 7-6 through five innings, the Rangers were able to capture the momentum on their side as they pulled even in the sixth courtesy of a Clayton Conn solo home run.

Regis would then take the lead for good with a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by junior Wes Miller, and padded the lead with a three-run eighth inning that saw junior Maxim Fullerton drive in two runs with a double and scamper home on a wild pitch later in the frame to make it an 11-7 lead.

On the mound, junior left-hander Griffin Bruder picked up his first win of 2024 with 3.1 shutdown innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six.

Fellow southpaw Ethan Sloan would nail down the final two outs of the ninth for his fourth save of the season to put a stamp on the 11-8 final.

Offensively, the Rangers produced their 11 runs on 16 hits and received three-hit performances from senior Levi Padilla (3-for-5, 2R) and junior Mattias Sessing (3-for-4, 3R).
Fullerton (2-for-4) paced Regis with three RBI while senior first baseman Peter Goldy (2-for-3) drove in two runs facing his former club.

GAME TWO | 3-1 WIN
Friday's nightcap was a good ol' fashion pitcher's duel, with the Rangers prevailing behind a commanding 5.1 innings turned in by junior right-hander Mason Ashcraft.

Ashcraft limited MSU Denver to just one run on five scattered hits, struck out three, and walked just one batter while only needing 63 total pitches to get through his 5.1.

"Mason has a veteran presence to himself, does a great job controlling what he can control, and I thought he turned in his best outing of the year," Jolley said. "He was able to keep a good hitting MSU Denver team off-balance, he worked ahead and was able to execute some key pitches when he needed them most."

With Regis holding a 2-1 lead in the sixth, Sloan was called upon again and was able to get the Rangers out a two-out, bases loaded jam to preserve the lead. The senior left-hander then worked a quick and efficient 1-2-3 ninth inning for his fifth save of the season and second save of the evening.

Offensively, the Rangers produced three timely RBI singles as junior Tanner Rice got Regis on the board in the top of the second, Padilla drove home a run in the third and junior Adam Paniagua delivered a key insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Conn completed his strong day by finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored atop the Regis batting order.
