Eisa posts career highs in points and blocks on Senior Night, but Rangers fall to CSU Pueblo in regular season finale

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University men's basketball team closed out the 2023-24 regular season on Saturday, falling by a tight 77-75 final to Colorado State University Pueblo inside the Regis Field House.

While the loss was not how the Rangers (15-13 overall, 12-10 RMAC) wanted to end their home stand, they remained locked in at No. 6 in the RMAC conference standings and will travel to take on No. 3 seed Colorado School of Mines in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Fighting for their playoff lives, CSU Pueblo (14-14 overall, 10-12 RMAC) came out of the gates strong and held a 22-12 lead over the Rangers at the 7:02 mark of the first half.

Regis would fight back, though, taking its first lead of the game at 34-33 with 2:38 remaining in the half on a corner 3-pointer from junior guard CJ Reed and heading into the locker rooms deadlocked at 39-39 with the ThunderWolves.

The Rangers, behind a career-high 25 points from forward Tarig Eisa on Senior Night, would build off that momentum as they built their largest lead of the game at 59-47 on one of five 3-pointers cashed in by Eisa on the evening.

Unfortunately for Regis, the ThunderWolves did not go away quietly as they whittled the double-digit deficit down to a one-possession game by the eight-minute media and retook their first lead of the second half at 67-65 with 6:05 remaining.

The two RMAC foes continued to trade punches back and forth over the final five minutes. Regis extended its lead to 75-71 late on a driving layup by freshman Jalen Brown, but would go the final 2:42 scoreless to crack the door back open.

CSU Pueblo took advantage of the late dry spell, tying the game at 75-75 with 1:24 remaining and then taking the lead for good on what proved to be the game-winning free throws by Makiah Morris with 58 ticks remaining.

Regis would get two clean looks in the final minute to tie or take the lead, but were unable to get a shot to fall as CSU Pueblo was able to steal away the 77-75 final.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis shot 49.1 percent (28-for-57) from the floor on Saturday while CSU Pueblo posted a shooting percentage of 46.8 (29-for-62).
  • CSU Pueblo outscored the Rangers, 18-12, on second-chance points.

  • Redshirt junior guard Eddy Egun was the second Ranger in double-figures with 12 points.
  • Junior guard Trey Bryant flirted with a triple-double on Saturday, finishing with eight points, seven rebounds and a career-high nine assists.
