Regis edged by No. 13 Colorado Mesa in Friday doubleheader loss

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team was able to put itself in position to win a pair of baseball games Friday against No. 13 ranked Colorado Mesa University. Unfortunately for the Rangers, they fell a couple plays short of completing the task, falling by finals of 13-9 and 14-8 that were not indicative of how close the two RMAC rivals played each other.

With the two wins, Colorado Mesa (20-9 overall, 13-2 RMAC) was able to build a small cushion atop the RMAC standings, while the Rangers (16-12-1 overall, 7-4 RMAC) slipped back to the third spot. Regis will go hunting a series split with the Mavericks when the teams play the series finale at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"When you're playing against good teams, and playing the game at a high level, the margin of error is so small and I think there are a couple things we wish we could go back and have the opportunity again," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "At the end of the day, Colorado Mesa was able to come through in some big situations a little more often than we were. They showed why they are a championship level ballclub and that's what our aspirations are to be."

GAME ONE | 13-9 LOSS
In the first game of the afternoon, the Rangers would draw first blood as for the second game in a row they produced a three-run first inning, courtesy of a RBI single from senior outfielder Levi Padilla, a RBI triple off the bat of junior catcher Adam Paniagua, and a productive run-scoring groundout by first baseman Matt Graf.

Colorado Mesa would answer back the ensuing half-inning, however, plating six runs to take a 6-3 lead and growing the advantage to 10-3 with a four-run third inning.

The Rangers, as they did in Thursday's 14-11 comeback victory, would chip away as they cut the deficit to 10-7 with a four-run third inning of their own, with the big blows being a RBI double from senior utility man Cam Dalrymple and a two-run single by junior shortstop Clayton Conn.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, that would be as close as they would get as the two teams traded small jabs at each other over the final four frames, with CMU holding on for the 13-9 final.

The top-four hitters in the Regis batting order all recorded two-hit games in the opener, with Conn and Graf each pacing the offense with two RBI.

GAME TWO | 14-8 LOSS
Friday's doubleheader finale was a heartbreaker for the Rangers, who came all the way back from down 6-1 to hold an 8-6 lead in the seventh inning, needing just three more outs to take their own 2-1 series lead.

CMU built its lead with a six-run top of the fourth, but the lead was short lived as the Rangers came storming back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the frame; four coming on a towering grand slam to left field by Paniagua.

The home run was Paniagua's RMAC-leading 12th homer of the spring, making him 8-for-13 with two home runs and 13 RBI through three games of the series.

After using the long ball to get even in the fourth, the Rangers took the lead in the fifth with well-executed small ball as they scored runs on back-to-back bunt plays, with runners on the corners and one out in the inning, executed by junior second baseman Tanner Rice and senior first baseman Peter Goldy that gave Regis an 8-6 lead.

Regis would hold that lead until the top of the seventh when CMU rallied for two one-out runs that forced extra innings.

The Rangers would have their chances to take the win in the home-half of the seventh and eighth innings, putting the winning run on base, but were unable to push the run across.

Colorado Mesa took advantage of the momentum swing — and a 50-50 potential strike three call that could have gotten Regis out of the ninth unscathed — to plate six two-out runs that proved to be the difference in the 14-8 final.

Paniagua (2-for-3, 4 RBI) and junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton (2-for-3, 1 run) were joined by graduate student Zach Barnao (2-for-2) with multi-hit games in the nightcap. For Barnao, drawing his first start of 2024, the two hits were his first career hits at the NCAA level.

Conn, who had a RBI single in the fourth, finished 1-for-4 to extend his 13-game hitting streak.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will look to build off the positives from Friday as they tangle with the nationally ranked Mavericks again on Saturday looking for a series split. First pitch of Game Four is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.

"We put ourselves in a position to win today and that's what you're always looking for. Unfortunately, things didn't fall our way this time," Jolley said. "But I still take our group every day of the week because I know what type of competitors they are and we'll look to put ourselves in a position to win another game tomorrow."
