Rangers fall to No. 13 Colorado Mesa in series finale

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team concluded an action-packed four games series against No. 13 Colorado Mesa on Saturday, falling by an 18-6 final in Game Four.

Saturday's game was the lone outlier in what was a back-and-forth, competition first three games between the two highest ranked RMAC teams in the South Central region entering play this week, with Colorado Mesa (21-9 overall, 14-2 RMAC) coming in at No. 2 in the NCBWA regional poll and the Rangers (16-13-1 overall, 7-5 RMAC) ranked at the No. 5 spot.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Six has been the lucky number for the Mavericks in the series against the Rangers. They had a pair of six-run innings in Friday's Game Three win (14-8) and got on the scoreboard first Saturday with a six-run second inning.

Colorado Mesa would not relinquish that momentum, adding three insurance runs in the third and fourth innings to put the Rangers in a 12-1 hole, which was aided by three errors in the field, defensively, in the early innings.

The Rangers, whose run in the third inning came courtesy of a bases loaded balk, would give their starters a breather as the game reached the middle and late innings en route to the 18-6 final.

Senior utility man Cam Dalrymple shined for the Rangers in his appearance off the bench, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of two-run doubles in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively.

Graduate student designated hitter Zach Barnao, who recorded his first two career hits in a start on Friday, continued his breakout weekend with two more hits and his first career RBI on Saturday.

On the mound, the Rangers received four clean innings of work from relievers Dylan De Leon, junior left-hander Riley Phelan, junior right-hander Stephan Moraski, and a clean inning from redshirt sophomore Brendan Thome in his Regis debut.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will look to build off the positives from their competitive series with the Mavericks when they head back on the road next weekend for a four-game set against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (7-21 overall, 4-8 RMAC).

Game One of the series gets underway at 3 p.m. on Friday at Mountain Lion Park.
