Regis hits program record nine home runs in Game One road win over UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team returned to its winning ways on Friday, launching a program record nine home runs and getting a quality start from junior right-hander Mason Ashcraft to earn a 19-12 road win over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in Game One of the series.

For the Rangers (17-13-1 overall, 8-5 RMAC), the nine home runs crushed the previous school record of six home runs in a single game, accomplished on three separate occasions with the last coming on March 17, 2010 at home against MSU Denver.

"We worked on a lot of different things in practice this week and it was nice to see some of that translate on both sides of the ball. I thought the UCCS starting pitcher threw pretty well, but we were able to take advantage of a couple mistakes," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "And with the wind gusts as strong as they were today, some of those mistakes we were able to put good swings on and hit out."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Friday's game started off as a pitcher's duel, with the Rangers' holding a 3-2 lead through the game's first four innings courtesy of a three-run bomb off the bat of junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton in the second inning.

Regis would use the long ball to balloon the lead to 8-2 in the sixth inning, receiving a solo home run by junior left-fielder Garrett Rede in the fifth, a solo home run by junior Adam Paniagua to lead off the sixth, and a three-run rocket from senior utility man Cam Dalrymple.

All four Rangers — Fullerton (2-for-5), Rede (4-for-5), Paniagua (3-for-6) and Dalrymple (3-for-5) — would hit two home runs on the afternoon while Fullerton paced all Regis players with a team-high six runs driven in.

It was a promising sign for Fullerton, who caught fire at this time last spring as he hit seven of his eight home runs in 2023 in the months of April and May.

"I thought Max put in a lot of work this week and was very coachable. We asked him to change a couple things in his setup and he was able to trust it and execute it. At this stage in the season, that's the biggest thing you ask your guys to do; trust you when you're asking for some changes to be made," Jolley said. "Obviously, Max had the two big home runs. But there were also a couple other at-bats where he hit the ball really, really hard and UCCS just made some nice plays, defensively. We need Max to get hot and if he's able to do that, it really adds to the middle of our lineup."

Senior outfielder Levi Padilla would hit the Rangers' ninth home run of the afternoon, a two-run shot in the eighth inning, adding to a day that saw the Regis lineup produced 19 runs on 21 hits and have eight different players in the batting order record at least one hit.

On the mound, Ashcraft picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season after throwing 6.2 quality innings. The big right-hander allowed five runs, but only one was earned, while striking out a season-high eight batters and walking just two.

"We're a better team when Mason throws the way he did today. He did a great job being consistent throwing multiple pitches for strikes, getting ahead of hitters, and there were times where he was able to pitch to contact," Jolley said. "I also thought he did a tremendous job putting away hitters in two-strike situations by being able to locate. We're excited to see where Mason continues to go."

UCCS briefly threatened to get back in the game with a three-run seventh inning, but the Rangers put the game away with a nine-run eighth to take their largest lead of the game at 19-5.

GAME NOTES
  • The Rangers' 2-7 hitters in their batting order all had multi-hit games, led by junior infielder Matt Graf (4-for-6, 3 runs) and Rede with four hits apiece.
  • Rede, Padilla and Paniagua all drove in 3 RBI.
  • With his performance on Friday, Dalrymple has now recorded two hits and driven in four RBI in back-to-back games.
UP NEXT
Regis and UCCS resume the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m. With heavy winds and cold conditions in the forecast, Jolley said the Rangers will need to stay locked in as they aim to put themselves in position to win another series.

"I thought we did a really good job as a pitching staff today limiting the free base runners via walks and hit batsmen. Those are the runs that can really hurt you, especially playing in windy conditions, that can turn a solo home run into 2-3 runs," Jolley said. "We'll have to be competitive in the strike zone again Saturday. We're playing against a team in UCCS that played a top-five team in Point Loma really tough and their guys show no quit, so we have to make sure we come ready to play."
