Regis splits Saturday doubleheader, takes 2-1 series lead into Sunday's finale at UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Battling a resilient University of Colorado-Colorado Springs squad, and the High Wind Warning issued across southern Colorado on Saturday, the Regis University baseball team was able to earn a doubleheader split with the Mountain Lions to take a 2-1 series lead into Sunday's finale.

Regis (18-14-1 overall, 9-6 RMAC) began the afternoon with a tight 14-12 loss, but rallied to take Saturday's nightcap with a 7-4 victory behind timely hitting and a shutdown effort by the bullpen.

"We were obviously playing in some not so favorable conditions, but both teams had to manage it and we were happy to come away with a split," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley.

GAME TWO | 7-4 WIN
Saturday's final game was a back-and-forth affair between the two RMAC foes as the game featured three times and five separate lead changes.

Senior outfielder Levi Padilla was at the center of the action, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 in Game Two as part of a five-hit afternoon.

The No. 2 hole hitter singled, stole third and would trot home on a throwing error by the UCCS catcher in the top of the first. Padilla also drove in a run with a RBI double in the second and was on base for a two-run, opposite field home run by junior catcher Adam Paniagua that gave Regis its 7-4 cushion in the sixth.

"Levi is seeing the ball really well and I think he has been doing a great job of not trying to do too much," Jolley said. "There's times where he is maybe looking to pull the ball and times where he is OK taking the ball back up the middle. He's been letting the game come to him."

On the mound, Regis right-hander Nick Jacobs was able to grind through a tough first two innings to go five strong, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out three, and not allowing a walk on 82 pitches en route to earning his fourth win (4-0) of 2024.

Jacobs would then hand the ball to the Regis bullpen and a pair of southpaws in junior Griffin Bruder and senior Ethan Sloan, who combined for two hitless innings of relief. The trio of Regis pitchers would hold UCCS off the scoreboard over the final five innings.

"I thought all three guys competed, threw strikes and threw very well. It was those zeroes that was probably the difference in the ballgame to give our offense the opportunities to tie and take the lead," Jolley said. "I was really happy with those guys and proud of our defense because nothing was easy today."

For Sloan, he'd strike out two hitters and earn his RMAC leading seventh save of the spring.

GAME ONE | 14-12 LOSS
In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Rangers were unable to overcome a slow start as the Mountain Lions jumped out to an 8-0 lead through the game's first three innings.

Regis would score all 12 of its runs over the next four frames, including a four-run seventh inning that would see the Rangers put the potential tying run in scoring position, but were unable to complete the comeback.

The Rangers, who hit a school record nine home runs in Friday's Game One win, added three more long balls in Saturday's opener.

Junior infielder Matt Graf got Regis on the board with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Padilla then launched a two-run shot in the sixth inning and junior Tanner Rice added a pinch-hit, solo home run to lead off the Rangers' seventh.

After plating their four runs in the seventh, Regis would load the bases with just one out in the inning, putting the potential go-ahead run at first, but had a 6-4-3 double play end the ballgame.

Padilla (2-for-3) paced all Regis hitters with three runs driven and added a pair of walks, while Graf (2-for-5), junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton (2-for-3) and junior third baseman CJ Difiglia (2-for-3) all added two hits and two RBI in Game One.

On the mound, junior left-hander Riley Phelan tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

UP NEXT
Regis and UCCS are schedule to play the crucial Game Four of the series at 12 p.m. Sunday as the Rangers' hunt their third RMAC series win of the season and UCCS tries to earn a series split.

"We have to come back and answer the bell for Round Four of this thing and I'm confident we'll come out and put in the effort to do that," Jolley said. "It's a challenge to win when you're on the road in any conference, especially in the RMAC. We're going to have to come out and pitch well, play clean defense, get timely hits and play baseball the right way."
