Rangers fall behind early, drop series opener to Orediggers

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team opened its four-game home series against Colorado School of Mines on Friday, falling by a 19-6 final in Game One.

Regis (18-16-1 overall, 9-8 RMAC) put itself behind the 8-ball early as the visiting Orediggers (20-15 overall, 13-8 RMAC) plated 11 of their 19 runs through the game's first two innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Colorado School of Mines captured all the momentum in the first inning, turning a two-out, runner at first situation into eight runs as nine straight batters would reach with two outs. The big blow came via a grand slam by Orediggers' catcher Tyler Pina that gave CSM a 5-0 lead and snowballed the inning.

Trailing 11-0, the Rangers were able to work themselves back to within striking distance with two runs in the second, courtesy of a two-run home run by junior left fielder Garrett Rede, and a three-run fourth inning that trimmed the deficit to 11-5.

Junior infielder CJ Difiglia lined a RBI sacrifice fly to right, senior Peter Goldy hustled out a RBI double, and fellow senior Levi Padilla singled home a run as part of the three-run fourth inning.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, Colorado School of Mines would answer with five runs of their own, plating two in the sixth and three in the seventh, to boost its lead back up to 11 at 16-5 en route to the 19-6 final.

Working behind hitters was a main culprit for the Rangers on Friday as Regis issued nine walks and had two hit batsmen on the afternoon.

Offensively, Rede paced the Regis lineup with a 2-for-3 performance and three RBI after adding an RBI single in the seventh. Padilla would also add a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-5 batting out of the No. 2 spot.

GAME NOTES
  • The win for the Orediggers snapped a six-game losing streak to the Rangers.
  • Friday's game marked the first home game for Regis against Colorado School of Mines since the 2019 season.
  • Junior right-hander Stephen Moraski gave the Rangers some quality innings as he pitched a career-long 4.0 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits while striking out two.
UP NEXT
The Rangers will look to bounce back on Saturday as they host a twin bill against the Orediggers, with game times scheduled for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
