Rangers split Saturday doubleheader with Orediggers

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team and Colorado School of Mines would leave the Regis Baseball Field with a split of Saturday's doubleheader, with the Rangers taking an 11-10 final in Game One before the Orediggers capped the afternoon with a 12-5 final.

Colorado School of Mines (21-16 overall, 14-9 RMAC) take a 2-1 series lead into Sunday's series finale, while the Rangers (19-17-1 overall, 10-9 RMAC) will look to earn a series split when action resumes at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

GAME ONE | 11-10 WIN
Regis began the day with a thrilling 11-10 victory over the Orediggers, using the long ball to build its lead in the early innings, before scoring the eventual winning run late on some well-executed small ball.

Trailing 1-0 in the first, the Rangers took a 3-1 lead on a towering home run to left by designated hitter Adam Paniagua — his RMAC-leading 16th home run of the spring — to highlight what was a five-run frame for the Rangers.

Regis would add a run in the fourth on a RBI double by junior Tanner Rice and ballooned its lead all the way up to 10-2 in the fourth, courtesy of a grand slam off the bat of junior outfielder Garrett Rede that he was able to sneak inside the left-field foul pole.

The grand slam for Rede was his second of the season, he also launched a grand slam in the season opener against Westmont College, and was his eighth home run of 2024 to rank second on the team behind Paniagua.

Colorado School of Mines would not go away quietly, however, as the Orediggers erupted for three runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth to pull back even with Regis at 10-10.

With one out and a runner at first in the home-half of the inning, junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton slapped an opposite-field double down the left-field line to put two men in scoring position. Rice would follow with a tremendous situational at-bat, pulling the ball to the right side for a RBI groundout that scored Matt Graf from third for what proved to be the game-winning run.

The trio of Rede (2-for-3, 4 RBI), Paniagua (1-for-3, 3 RBI) and Rice (1-for-3, 3 RBI) combined to drive in 10 of the Rangers' 11 runs.

Regis senior closer Ethan Sloan would nail down the final three outs in the top of the seventh to secure his third win and give the Rangers the 11-10 final.

GAME TWO | 12-5 LOSS
In Saturday's nightcap, a pair of tough innings on the hill would prove to be the difference as all 12 of the Orediggers' runs would come either in the first or fourth frames.

Colorado School of Mines put a four-spot on the board courtesy of five hits and a pair of Regis errors in the top of the first to capture the early momentum.

Regis would claw back to even the score at 4-4 through three innings, receiving RBI doubles by Paniagua and Graf in the first and run-scoring fielder's choice plays in the second and third, respectively, to make it a brand new ballgame entering the middle innings.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the Orediggers' lineup exploded for eight runs, including four home runs, in the top of the fourth to retake a 12-4 lead and extinguish all the momentum Regis built during its initial comeback.

Mines would hold Regis to just one run the rest of the way, a RBI single by Rice in fifth, to hold on for the 12-5 final and take a 2-1 series lead into Sunday's finale.

UP NEXT
Regis will look to bounce back and salvage a series split on Sunday when the two RMAC foes square off in Game Four. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Regis Baseball Field in Denver.
