Rangers erupt for 17 runs, knock off Mines to secure a series split

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team closed out its four-game home series against nearby rivals Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, erupting for 17 runs on 17 hits in a 17-8 win over the Orediggers to secure a series split.

Regis (20-17-1 overall, 11-9 RMAC) had five different players record multi-hit games, led by junior Maxim Fullerton's career-high 5-for-5 performance, and received some timely pitching en route to earning their 20th win of the 2024 campaign.

"I thought this win was especially big for us because we've known that, the last couple weeks, we haven't played our best brand of baseball. But I came into today with a lot of optimism because I felt during Saturday's games that we had started to turn the corner again," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "We're really starting to swing the bats well and we're hoping to keep this thing going."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0 entering the home-half of the second, the Rangers hung their own crooked number against the Orediggers (21-17 overall, 14-10 RMAC) as they struck for eight runs on seven hits.

Senior designated hitter Cam Dalrymple roped a two-run triple into the right-field corner to get the scoring started. He'd come home two batters later on a two-run double by third baseman Peter Goldy, who then scored himself two batters later on a bullet, two-run single by fellow senior Levi Padilla.

The Rangers would cap the emphatic eight-run inning one a two-run home run by junior catcher Adam Paniagua; a lined shot down the left-field line for his RMAC leading 17th long ball of the spring.

"I thought we were able to execute a lot of different strategies with those at-bats in the second inning and allowed us to open things up and play with some momentum," Jolley said of the eight-run inning.

Colorado School of Mines would inch back to within two runs at 8-6, plating three in the top of the fourth and one in the fifth, before the Rangers put the game out of reach with a six-spot of their own in the seventh.

Junior outfielder Garrett Rede, who hit a grand slam in Saturday's Game One win, would again come through in the clutch as he roped a three-run, bases-clearing triple to right-center that gave the Rangers breathing room again at 11-6.

"That was a huge swing that Garrett had. He's really started to settle in and been taking a lot better swings the last couple of weeks," Jolley said. "The thing that I thought was the most impressive with the swing was, he's been doing a lot of damage on the pull side, but he was able to stay on that pitch and drive it to right-center. It was a huge swing. We're probably standing here with a win today because of that hit."

Rede's triple opened the floodgates as Fullerton, who now has 16 hits and an eight-game hitting streak to begin April after his 5-for-5 day Sunday, blistered an RBI single to score Rede one batter later. Junior infielder Wes Miller then came off the bench and lined a two-run single to right field to cap the inning and balloon the Regis lead to 14-6.

On the mound, Regis senior left-hander Ethan Sloan (4-1) came on in relief and earned his second win of the weekend, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four. Sloan, the RMAC leader in saves this season with seven, turned in his longest outing of the season to help the Rangers preserve their lead in the middle innings.

Sloan gave way to right-hander Trevor Moeck in the eighth inning and the right-hander tossed a scoreless 1.2 innings to close the game out, highlighted by the strikeout of his brother Wayne Moeck, the Orediggers' starting center fielder, to end the eighth.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will now turn their attention toward another four-game home series next weekend against New Mexico Highlands University, with Game One scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday.

Next week's series with the Cowboys continues a month-long stretch for the Rangers where they will play three of their final four series of the regular season at home, with the one road trip coming in two weeks just down the road at Colorado Christian (April 27-28).

"This is an important stretch for us because we want to be playing our best baseball at the end of the year going into the RMAC Tournament," Jolley said. "It's nice not having to worry about travel situations. But the biggest thing we preach every day is that we're a family and this stretch of home games, and a nearby road series, allows all 46 of our guys to be around and support each other."
