Armendariz and Rede each launch grand slams, Rangers sweep Sunday doubleheader

DENVER — After inclement weather caused a two-day delay in the start of the Regis University baseball team's series against New Mexico Highlands, the Rangers responded with a pair of comeback victories, 18-10 and 11-4, to sweep Sunday's doubleheader.

Regis (22-17-1 overall, 13-9 RMAC) climbs to third place in a crowded RMAC standings with the victories, while the losses dropped New Mexico Highlands to 7-33 overall and 3-19 in the RMAC.

"Being able to come out and get two wins is huge and I thought we were able to win in a couple different ways in each game," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "We swung the bats really well in Game One. In Game Two, their starter did a good job keeping us off-balance, but we were able to outlast them and got some good pitching of our own."

GAME ONE | 18-10 WIN
Regis built an early 3-1 lead, getting on the scoreboard first with a two-run home run by second baseman Tanner Rice in the second.

New Mexico Highlands would throw up a six-spot in the top of the fourth, though, to take a 7-3 lead into the middle innings.

The Rangers chipped away with a run in the fourth, and two runs in the fifth on a two-run single by senior catcher Reagan Guthrie, before exploding for a 10-run seventh that blew the game open.

Senior designated hitter Dakari Armendariz was at the center of the rally, driving in a run on a RBI double that brought Regis within a run at 8-7, before capping the inning with a grand slam to left field for his first home run in a Rangers' uniform.

Armendariz (2-for-3) drove in a team-high five RBI, all coming in the seventh inning, and was one of seven different Regis players to record multi-hit games as the team combined for 18 runs on 16 hits in the series opener.

"A lot of different guys contributed and did some good things for us, which with some of the injury circumstances we're dealing with now, we've got to have. Not necessarily guys trying to perform at a higher level, but coming through in situations," Jolley said. "I thought we did a really good job of that all day long, offensively."

On the mound, junior right-hander Trevor Moeck earned his first win of the spring with three solid innings of relief, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out four.

GAME TWO | 11-4 WIN
In the final game of Sunday's twin bill, the Rangers would again use a big inning late to rally for an 11-4 victory over the Cowboys.

New Mexico Highlands scored all four of its runs in the top of the third, taking advantage of two softly hit infield singles and a bit-by-pitch before a grand slam put the Cowboys on top, 4-0.

The Rangers were able to inch back to within 4-3, courtesy of some small ball and heads-up base running, despite being limited to two hits through the game's first five innings.

Regis would punish the Cowboys' bullpen in the sixth, though, as the team produced eight runs on seven hits. Senior outfielder Levi Padilla gave Regis its first lead of the ballgame at 5-4 with an RBI single.

One batter later, with the bases loaded, junior outfielder Garrett Rede would launch his third grand slam of 2024, and his ninth home run of the spring, to provide the Rangers with a 9-5 lead and some breathing room.

Regis would take on two more runs with productive outs — a RBI groundout from Maxim Fullerton and sacrifice fly by Rice — to put the finishing touches on its 11-4 victory.

Junior left-hander Griffin Bruder gave the Rangers some length with five innings of work in Game Two, allowing just the four runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

Senior right-hander Luke Douthitt would pick up the victory with a clean sixth inning and graduate student Caleb Ayers tossed a scoreless seventh to nail down the doubleheader sweep.

UP NEXT
The Rangers and Cowboys will conclude the series with another doubleheader on Monday, starting with a nine-inning contest scheduled for 12 p.m. The final game of the series, a seven-inning Game Four, will follow at approximately 3 p.m.
