Rangers sweep Monday doubleheader, series against New Mexico Highlands

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team closed out its first series sweep of 2024 in convincing fashion Monday, picking up wins of 17-5 and 12-4 over New Mexico Highlands University to extend the team's current winning streak to five games.

With the victory, the Rangers (24-17-1 overall, 15-9 RMAC) remain one game up in the loss column on MSU Denver, Colorado School of Mines and Adams State in a crowded RMAC standings behind conference leaders Colorado Mesa.

"I'm happy for our guys and proud of the effort they put in, dealing with the rain and the snow this week, missing two days of practice and still being able to come out and sweep a series," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "It's never an easy thing to accomplish against any opponent. New Mexico Highlands does some good things that gave us trouble at times, but we were able to stay mentally tough and have that internal grit that we talk about with our guys."

GAME ONE | 17-5 WIN
Ten different players combined on the Rangers' 16 hits in the first victory on Monday. Regis produced a pair of home runs — a solo blast by shortstop Clayton Conn in the fourth inning and a two-run shot by outfielder Maxim Fullerton in the seventh — but the majority of the Rangers' offense came from well-executed small ball.

Regis produced 12 singles in its 16 hits and stole a season-high seven bases, led by senior outfield Levi Padilla with three bags and Conn with a pair of stolen bases to add to his team lead (26-29).

The Rangers jumped out to a 4-0 advantage, plating three runs in the first a RBI singles from redshirt senior Zach Barnao and senior catcher Reagan Guthrie, and tacked on another run in the second on a RBI single through the left side by junior outfielder Garrett Rede.

New Mexico Highlands would battle back to briefly tie the score at 5-5 after the top of the sixth, but the Rangers feasted against the NMHU bullpen, scoring the final 12 unanswered runs with three in the sixth, six runs in the seventh, and three more runs in the eighth inning to force the run rule.

Junior right-hander Wyatt Zsidisin picked up his third win of the year after punching out eight in six innings of work, while left-hander Ethan Sloan added to his RMAC saves lead (8) after coming into an 8-5 game in the seventh and getting the final four outs.

Padilla paced all Regis hitters with a 3-for-4 performance and three runs scored, while Barnao (2-for-5) drove in a team-high four RBI and the duo of Fullerton (2-for-4) and CJ Difiglia (1-for-2) each drove in three apiece.

GAME TWO | 12-4 WIN
In a bullpen outing in Game Four, the Rangers used seven different pitchers to hold the visiting Cowboys to just four runs on seven hits en route to a 12-4 victory in the series finale.

NMHU briefly owned a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Rangers quickly recaptured the lead and momentum with a seven-run home half of the frame, with the big blow being an opposite field grand slam off the bat of Fullerton.

The home run for Fullerton was his second of the day and eighth of the season, breaking open what was a 3-2 lead for the Rangers at the time.

"The previous at-bat, they got Max and I thought he was maybe a little jumpy at the ball in that plate appearance. So when he came back up again, the big thing I told him was make sure to see the baseball and then make your move," Jolley said. "We were kind of expecting, because of the situation, that he might see a first-pitch change up. They left it up and Max is a strong kid. He did a good job staying back and drove it through the wind to left field."

Regis would add an insurance run in the fourth without the benefit of a hit, then plated three more runs in the fifth as the team took advantage of five walks, five hit batsmen and two wild pitches by NMHU pitching.

Senior third baseman Peter Goldy roped an RBI double to left in the sixth inning to give the Rangers their largest lead of the game at 12-2 en route to the 12-4 final.

On the mound, Regis freshman Carson Gantz earned his third win of the spring with two clean innings out of the bullpen. The Rangers would also receive clean innings of relief from junior right-hander Nick Jacobs, senior right-hander Logan Deskin, redshirt sophomore Brendan Thome and junior left-hander Riley Phelan, who struck out the side in the sixth, to nail down the victory.

"Overall, I couldn't be more pleased with how our guys attacked the strike zone, competing and working ahead," Jolley said. "It gives us some confidence and something to build off of going into our next series."

UP NEXT
The Rangers won't have to travel far this week as they are due to play nearby rival Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, with a pair of doubleheaders currently scheduled for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
