Rangers' lineup produces 45 runs on 47 hits during Sunday's doubleheader sweep of CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team pushed its winning streak to a season-long seven games and counting on Sunday, producing 45 runs on 47 hits in wins of 18-7 and 27-10 over Colorado Christian University.

In addition to extending the streak, Regis (26-17-1 overall, 17-9 RMAC) moved into sole possession of second place in the RMAC standings with the two wins on Sunday, a half-game up on Colorado School of Mines, while the losses dropped CCU to 5-38 overall and 3-23 inside the conference.

"We've tried to preach to our guys that the most important game is always the next one. That allows us to stick to the process and nuances of the game of baseball and not get caught up in who we're playing. At the end of the day, we want to go out and play our style and our brand of baseball," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "We want to concentrate on us and I thought we saw a lot of really good, competitive at-bats up and down the lineup with the guys continuing to play really good team baseball."

GAME ONE | 18-7 WIN
Eight different players produced multi-hit games in Sunday's series opener, while the Rangers as a team racked up seven extra-base hits in an 18-7 rout of the Cougars.

Junior outfielder Garrett Rede and senior catcher Reagan Guthrie each homered, with Rede's solo shot in the ninth being his 10th of the spring and Guthrie's solo homer to left-center in the fifth being his first long ball of the season.

With the Rangers already leading 7-2 through four innings, they put the game out of reach for good with a nine-run fifth, featuring a two-run single by junior first baseman Matt Graf, a two-run triple by junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton, Guthrie's homer and a RBI triple by junior shortstop Clayton Conn.

Fullerton (4-for-4, 4 RBI) and Guthrie (4-for-5, 3 RBI) each paced the Regis offense with four hits apiece in Game One, while Fullerton would add to his monster day with four more hits in Game Two to finish a staggering 8-for-8 with eight runs scored and seven driven in on the afternoon.

Conn, senior outfielder Levi Padilla and senior utility man Cam Dalrymple all added three hits apiece, as well, to help lead a Regis lineup that produced a season-high 26 hits in the ballgame.

On the mound, senior right-hander Mason Ashcraft went five strong en route to earning his fifth win of the spring. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits and struck out six on 92 pitches before giving way to the bullpen.

Junior right-hander Wyatt Sargent tossed a clean 1-2-3 sixth inning with two strikeouts, and redshirt freshman Frankie Tarantino allowed just three hits and no runs over the final three innings to get his first collegiate save.

GAME TWO | 27-10 WIN
As they did in the opener, the Rangers' lineup got after CCU pitching early and often in the final game of Sunday's twin bill. Regis put up five runs in the top of the second, with run-scoring triples off the bats of Padilla and senior catcher Austin Hamilton.

Hamilton would drive in another run in the third on a groundout, and added a three-run, bases clearing double in the sixth as part of a six RBI afternoon for the Regis catcher. He and Guthrie combined for six hits and nine RBI on Sunday filling in for the team's home run and RBI leader, Adam Paniagua.

"It's been hue the last six games getting that kind of production from the catcher position. And both Reagan and Austin have caught really well behind the plate too," Jolley said. "The injury to Adam hurts because he is a big part of our team, but it has provided opportunities for others to step up. They've done an outstanding job just putting good swings on the baseball."

Regis would go on to build its lead up to 10-1 with a four-run fourth inning, courtesy of a solo home run by Padilla and a three-run shot by Fullerton, before CCU started to mount a comeback.
The cougars trimmed the Rangers' lead down to 10-7 after five innings, and remained within striking distance at 14-10 through six frames, but Regis buried CCU with a 13-run seventh that saw the Rangers send 16 men to the plate.

Redshirt freshman Aaron Kidd roped a three-run double to left center and senior transfer Zach Barnao came off the bench to launch a three-run, pinch-hit home run to left for his first NCAA home run of his career to help highlight the inning.

"It was an awesome moment for Zach. He's a guy who is probably deserving of more playing time, but it goes back to the depth of our team. But man, since the Colorado Mesa series, Zach is a big physical guy who just lets it rip at the plate," Jolley said. "Not only am I fired up for him, but I think he's an awesome teammate and his teammates are very happy for him and excited for his success."

Fullerton (4-for-4, 5 runs, 3 RBI) and Graf (4-for-6, 2 run) led all Rangers with four hits apiece in Game Two, while Padilla senior third baseman Peter Goldy each collected three hits as Regis produced 27 runs on 21 hits in the nightcap.

Junior left-hander Griffin Bruder picked up the win in Game Two, going 4.0 innings and limiting CCU to three earned runs on five hits.

Senior right-hander Logan Deskin tossed a clean sixth inning and redshirt sophomore Brendan Thome worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to slam the door on the 27-10 final.

UP NEXT
Regis and CCU will conclude the four-game series with another doubleheader on Monday. A single, nine-inning contest will get the day started at 12 p.m. before the Rangers and Cougars conclude with a seven-inning game scheduled for 3 p.m.

"The first message to our guys for Monday is to act like champions in the classroom and go get good grades this week during Finals Week," Jolley said. "The second part is for us to make sure we treat Monday's games like the series is 0-0. We have to go out there and attack because we fully anticipate CCU coming out ready to give us their best."
