Rangers split Monday's doubleheader, earn 3-1 series win over CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team secured its fourth RMAC series win of the season on Monday, splitting a doubleheader with nearby rivals Colorado Christian University to earn a 3-1 series victory.

Regis (27-18-1 overall, 18-10 RMAC) fell by a narrow 5-4 score in Game One on Monday, but rallied for 11 late runs in Game Two of the twin bill to win 16-9 over the Cougars (6-39 overall, 4-24 RMAC).

The Rangers will head into the final of the regular season this Friday and Saturday against Colorado State University Pueblo with a one-game lead over Colorado School of Mines for the No. 2 spot in the RMAC standings.

"Anytime you have a chance to win a series and take 3-of-4, that's always the goal, especially on the road," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "Baseball is a game where anyone can win on any given day, so we're always happy when we can pick up conference series wins."

GAME TWO | 16-9 WIN
Colorado Christian was able to match the Rangers toe-to-toe much of Monday afternoon, striking for five runs in the home-half of the first inning to put Regis in a 5-2 hole early on in the series finale.

Regis would inch back to tie the game at 5-5 with a three-run third inning, courtesy of a RBI double from junior outfielder Garrett Rede and a two-run single roped into left-center by fellow junior outfielder, Maxim Fullerton.

The Cougars broke the tie in the fourth with a pair of runs, and held a 7-5 lead heading into the late innings, before the Rangers' lineup exploded for 11 runs over the final two frames; highlighted by a nine-run top of the sixth that swung the game back in the Rangers' favor at 14-7.

Regis would sent 14 hitters to the plate in the sixth, scoring nine runs on six hits while also racking up six stolen bases in the inning.

Senior infielder Dakari Armendariz drove in two runs with a pinch-hit double down the left-field line to tie the score at 7-7. Regis would also receive RBI knocks in the inning from junior shortstop Clayton Conn, Rede, Fullerton and a RBI double by redshirt sophomore speedster Nolan Johnson to cap the frame.

"Offensively, we were able to get some guys on base in that sixth inning and start running our offense," Jolley said. "The difference between the two games was, in Game One, we had a couple chances to either move a guy or drive in a run with less than two outs and weren't able to execute. Where in Game Two, we had some really big, clutch hits that led up to that nine-spot. We were able to execute a little bit better and some of the balls fell in."

Rede (3-for-5, 4 RBI) and Fullerton (2-for-3, 3 RBI) continued to feast in the heart of the Rangers' lineup while table setters in Conn (2-for-5, 2 runs) and senior outfielder Levi Padilla (2-for-2, 2 BB, 3 runs) did their part atop the batting order.

On the mound, senior right-hander Luke Douthitt gave the Rangers a strong 1.1 innings of scoreless relief before giving way to junior left-hander Wyatt Sargent, who was able to get a big punch out in the bottom of the fifth to get the Rangers out of a two-on, two-out jam.

"I thought we had a lot of guys throw pretty well today. Nick Jacobs had a better start than his line indicates. Luke came out and threw well and then when he kind of ran into trouble, Sargent was able to get a strikeout in a huge situation," Jolley said. "Wyatt is a kid who hadn't pitched a ton this year, but the last two days, it has been invaluable for him to get that experience going into postseason play."

GAME ONE | 5-4 LOSS
Colorado Christian would win Game One of Monday's doubleheader, taking advantage of three Regis errors and some quality pitching on the mound en route to the 5-4 final.

Regis was able to put two runs up in the top of the second on RBI singles by Fullerton and senior catcher Reagan Guthrie, but CCU would answer with three runs of its own in the home half of the inning and another in the third to take a 4-2 advantage.

Fullerton added another two hits in Game One, two of the Rangers' seven hits in the ballgame, to finish the series a stunning 12-for-15 with 10 runs scored and 11 RBI.

Trailing by the 4-2 margin in the seventh, the Rangers were able to take advantage of some defensive miscues by the Cougars as an outfield error and a wild pitch brought Regis back even at 4-4.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, they were unable to capitalize on the momentum as CCU manufactured a go-ahead run in the eighth, and Cougars' reliever Saxton Sorenson tossed 2.2 innings of no-hit baseball to secure the 5-4 final.

Junior right-hander Wyatt Zsidisin turned in a good start and earned a no-decision, allowing just two earned runs on four hits while striking out four in his six innings of work.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will now prepare for a challenging rest of the week on and off the field as Regis students take their final exams and the baseball team prepares to host CSU Pueblo this Friday and Saturday to conclude the regular season. Game times are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day.

In addition to Senior Day following the conclusion of Saturday's contests, the Rangers will also be trying to nail down their seed for the upcoming RMAC Tournament, with just one-game separating No. 2 and No. 4 seeds entering the final weekend.

"We have to continue to handle the things we can control. Obviously, there's going to be some anxiety with Finals Week, the emotional component of Senior Day, and the looking forward to playing in the conference tournament. At the end of the day, we don't control any of those things other than how we prepare," Jolley said. "The message to the guys is we need to get back after it. There's still plenty of things we can sharpen up, we're not a finished product, and we need to continue to try and be the best versions of ourselves in all three facets of the game."
