Rangers split with CSU Pueblo to open final home stand

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team opened up its final home series of the regular season on Friday, earning a doubleheader split against Colorado State University Pueblo to hold on to second place in the RMAC standings heading into Saturday's final two contests.

Regis (28-19-1 overall, 19-11 RMAC) defeated the visiting ThunderWolves (27-20 overall, 16-14 RMAC) by a final of 20-6 in Game One before falling 9-2 in the second half of the twin bill. The Rangers are now tied for second with Colorado School of Mines (26-18, 19-11 RMAC) as the Orediggers get ready for their final two games against UCCS on Saturday.

Saturday's contests for the Rangers, scheduled for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.) will be part of Senior Day, with the ceremony to be held following the conclusion of the series finale.

GAME ONE | 20-6 WIN
After briefly falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, the Rangers put on a power display in the Game One win over CSU Pueblo as the team hit three home runs through the game's first two innings and a total of extra-base hits on the afternoon.

Junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton, fresh off his RMAC and South Central Regional Player of the Week honors, continued his torrid April into the month of May as he launched a 1-0 pitch to dead center for a grand slam that gave Regis a 6-2 lead in the home-half of the first. It was Fullerton's 10th home run of the spring.

Just three batters later, senior third baseman Peter Goldy connected on a 3-1 fastball, drilling a moonshot home run to straight left for his first homer in a Regis uniform to make it a 7-2 lead.

In the second inning, senior designated hitter Zach Barnao, who drove in a run with a hit-by-pitch his first time up, turned on the first pitch he saw for another deep home run to left — his second of the spring — to balloon the Regis lead to 9-2.

Regis would maintain a 12-4 lead into the late innings before putting the game away with an eight-run sixth that would force the game to be called due to the 12-run rule after seven innings.

On the mound, junior right-hander Mason Ashcraft earned his sixth win of 2024 with six solid innings, allowing four runs on five hits — no runs over his final three frames — while striking out six.

Offensively, the Regis lineup had six players record multi-hit games, led by junior outfielder Garrett Rede and his 3-for-4 and four runs scored batting out of the No. 3 hole. Barnao (2-for-4, 3 runs, 4 RBI) and Fullerton (2-for-4, 4 RBI) each added two hits, as did junior first baseman Matt Graf, who finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three driven in.
Junior shortstop Clayton Conn, who set the Regis single-season stolen base record on Monday against Colorado Christian, added another two hits and a stolen base atop the batting order.

GAME TWO | 9-2 LOSS
In the final game Friday, the 9-2 final score ended up misleading for how tight of a ballgame the two RMAC foes played through the first five innings of the seven-inning contest.

CSU Pueblo again struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but Regis countered with two of its own on a RBI groundout by Graf and a run-scoring single by senior Cam Dalrymple.

The ThunderWolves evened the score at 2-2 with a run in the third via a sacrifice fly, as junior right-hander Trevor Moeck came out of the bullpen and limited the damage in a bases loaded, no out situation.

Moeck would keep CSU Pueblo off the scoreboard until the sixth inning, but the ThunderWolves were able to strike for six runs in the frame en route to the 9-2 victory.

Senior outfielder Levi Padilla had a sensational performance, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 with a double batting out of the No. 2 spot. But the Regis lineup as a whole was held to eight hits by three CSU Pueblo pitchers.

UP NEXT
The Rangers and ThunderWolves will conclude the 2024 regular season on Saturday with another doubleheader, with game times set for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Regis will hold a ceremonial first pitch prior to the 12 p.m. game, while the Senior Day ceremony will start approximately 10-15 minutes after the conclusion of the 3 p.m. contest.
