Zsidisin dazzles for eight innings, Rangers top Orediggers to advance to RMAC Tournament title game

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Regis University baseball team shook off its first loss of the 2024 RMAC Tournament earlier in the day Friday, bouncing back from the 7-1 defeat to No. 1 seed Colorado Mesa to steamroll No. 3 seed Colorado School of Mines in an elimination nightcap.

With the 12-2 victory Friday evening, the Rangers (32-21-1 overall) punched their ticket to Saturday's RMAC Tournament championship game and a rematch with the No. 19 ranked Mavericks (37-16 overall).

Junior right-hander Wyatt Zsidisin led the charge for Regis on Friday evening, pitching a career-long eight innings to not only send the Rangers into Saturday's final, but preserve the bullpen to give Regis all hands on deck against the Mavericks.

"Wyatt commanded the zone with all three pitches, continued to pound the zone and get ahead of hitters. He was tremendous," said Regis head baseball coach, Pat Jolley. "Defensively, behind him, we made a lot of big plays. Clayton Conn turned two unassisted double-plays, Levi Padilla made an unreal catch in the gap, and it was just a really great game for us. We did a great job bouncing back from the loss earlier in the day, in a game that I thought we played well in too. Our pitching has been outstanding this tournament and I couldn't be happier for Wyatt with his performance tonight and in his growth and development."

GAME TWO | 12-2 WIN VS. COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES
Friday evening belonged to Zsidisin and the Rangers as the Western Nebraska Community College transfer baffled the Orediggers lineup, limiting them to just two runs on five hits while striking out five on 114 pitches.

The lone blemishes against Zsidisin came in the top of the third inning, when Colorado School of Mines was able to plate two runs on two hits. But the lead was short-lived as the Rangers came roaring back with a five-spot of their own in the home-half of the inning.

Padilla brought Regis back even at 2-2 with a two-run single to left and scored three batters later on a three-run, bases clearing double off the bat of senior designated hitter Zach Barnao that gave Regis its first lead at 5-2.

Regis would tack on a pair of unearned insurance runs in the fifth, taking advantage of a fielding error by the Orediggers' pitcher Jackson Bakovich, capped by a RBI single from junior outfielder Maxim Fullerton to push the lead to 7-2.

The Rangers would put the game away for good in the eighth inning as they sent 11 hitters to the plate and plated another five insurance runs, receiving run-scoring singles by junior shortstop Clayton Conn, Padilla and junior outfielder Garrett Rede, as well as an RBI walk from Barnao to give him a game-high four RBI.

Padilla led all Regis players with a 3-for-4, 3 runs and 3 RBI performance, while Fullerton (2-for-5) and senior third baseman Peter Goldy (2-for-4) each added multi-hit games.

GAME ONE | 7-1 LOSS VS. COLORADO MESA
In the first game on Friday, the Rangers were unable to string enough hits together against Colorado Mesa starter Liam Hohenstein as the Mavericks' right-hander went all nine innings in a 7-1 win for CMU.

Regis was able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, courtesy of an RBI single from junior first baseman Matt Graf, but were held to just five total hits by Hohenstein, who struck out nine and needed 122 pitches to get through his nine innings.

Junior right-hander Mason Ashcraft was solid for the Rangers, allowing just three earned runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work while striking out four.

Colorado Mesa was opportunistic, offensively, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth and adding another three-spot in the seventh to build its cushion.

Rede paced the Regis offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.

UP NEXT
The Rangers and Mavericks, for the second year in a row, will do battle again at 1 p.m. Saturday in the RMAC Tournament championship game at The Diamond in Grand Junction.

If Regis wins the 1 p.m. game, handing the Mavericks their first loss of the tournament, a winner-take-all game will follow at 5 p.m. to crown the RMAC champion.

"We're excited to be back in it. We want to be in a position where we're playing in a regional caliber field and tomorrow is a really good opportunity for us to do that," Jolley said. "We have the chance to bounce-back against Colorado Mesa and we know we're going to have to play better than we did Game One against them today. We're really excited for the opportunity."
