Top-seeded Rangers score 11 straight goals to pull away from No. 4 seed Westminster in RMAC semi-finals

DENVER, Colo. — Eyeing the program's fifth straight RMAC Tournament championship, the No. 6 ranked and top-seeded Regis University women's lacrosse team was all business on Friday in the semi-final round, knocking off No. 4 seed Westminster University, 17-3, to punch its ticket to Sunday's championship game.

Regis (17-1 overall) received four goals apiece from sophomore midfielder Shea Murphy and graduate student Lily Ferguson, and scored 11 straight goals between the second and third quarters, in what was a methodical victory over the Griffins (6-9 overall).

"I'm really excited for the girls. Something we've talked about all year was getting to this moment. Playing in May is really exciting to us," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "The team works really hard day in and day out for opportunities like this and I thought we performed really well."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Facing each other for a third time in 2024, the Rangers and Griffins played each other relatively evenly through the game's opening period as Regis held a 4-2 lead and capitalizing on seven turnovers by the Griffins.

Murphy scored her first of four goals to opening the game's scoring at the 13:34 mark, while sophomore Lauren Sheets, Ferguson and the RMAC midfielder of the year Bailey Truex all added first-quarter scores.

Regis would take control of the game for good in the second quarter, though, as the team blanked Westminster, 7-0, and held a dominating 14-2 advantage in shots for the period to balloon the lead to 11-2 at the halftime break.

Sophomore midfielder Maggie Schipfer scored all three of her goals on the afternoon during the second period, while graduate student attacker Gabby Rothermund racked up four first-half assists.

Over the final 30 minutes, the Rangers held a slim 11-9 shots advantage, but still managed to outscore the Griffins, 6-1, in the second half thanks to another strong performance in net by senior goalkeeper, Elizabeth Myotte.

The RMAC Goalie of the Year, making her first career playoff start, stopped nine of the 12 shots on goal she faced.

"Liz was really strong in the cage for us and has been a brick wall all season. She continued to be so (Friday)," Kellner said. "And one of our main goals today was to create opportunities for ourselves from our defense, turn it into offense, which I think we were able to do that."

Ferguson paced all Regis players with three caused turnovers, while junior midfielder Megan Bunker continued her dominance in the draw circle with a game-high nine draw controls to go with three ground balls.

Truex and sophomore attacker Noemi Ramirez rounded out the five Regis players with multi-goal performances Friday, while Bunker and Sheets gave the Rangers a total of seven players in the scoring column.

UP NEXT
The five-time defending RMAC regular season champions will look to make it five straight tournament titles, as well, when the Rangers square off against No. 2 seed Colorado Mesa at 2 p.m. Sunday in the championship game.

Colorado Mesa defeated UCCS, 14-8, in the second semi-final game played on the Regis University campus Friday evening.
