DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Soccer team hosted Simon Fraser University (B.C.) in their season opener on Thursday night, but fell to the Red Leafs, 0-3.
The Rangers fall to 0-3, while the Red Leafs improve to 3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alex Baer would take the first shot of the match, narrowly missing by hitting the crossbar, followed by a shot on goal for SFU by Sarah Caravatta, saved by Freshman GK Maggie Payne. After Sarah Wynn and Elsa Nolen took shots for RU, and Payne saved two more attempts, Simon Fraser would score in the 32nd minute, an Isabella Muzzolini goal assisted by Kiera Scott and Raegan MacKenzie. Paige Davis had one final shot before the end of the period, but it would go wide right.
Regis had three shots early in the second half, but Muzzolini scored her second goal of the game at 63:55. The Red Leafs controlled the game for most the second half, as the Rangers only managed one more shot, taken by Cristina Ciofani. With under four minutes left, SFU extended their lead one more time, sealing the 3-0 win.
"I think we are still trying to find our identity," said Head Coach Jeff Frykholm, "we have a group of really talented players, but over a third of them are new. It's gonna take a while to establish who we are and how we want to play."
"[Simon Fraser] is a really good team," Frykholm continued. "We try to schedule the best teams we can in the non-league games. They had a style and composure to them that made it difficult for us. Its not how you want to open up at home, but we told the players before and after the game, we are still finding our identity, and that through your experiences."
