DENVER, Colo. - Despite a competitive start, the Regis University women's soccer team fell to St. Mary's University (Texas) 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers drew nine corner kicks to the Rams' two and led the game with six saves but fell to the challenging regional opponent.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rams struck first when Shelby Paniagua scored off of a penalty kick at 6:10. The Ranger answered quickly as Madison Moss found the back of the net off an assist from Brooke Castillo in the ninth minute. The Rangers took the lead with another assisted goal from Alyssa Granno to Natalie Bunch and held on 2-1 for the remainder of the first half.
Scoring three goals in short order from 53:11 to 65:45, the Rattlers got up 4-2 early in the second half.
Battling until the final horn blew, the Rangers recorded one more goal at 85:55 as Madeline Gardner drilled a ball home off an assist from Bunch. However, it would be the final attempt of the match, and the 3-4 result held.
The Rangers played as a gritty unit, with all three goals assisted, and goalkeepers Grace Glover and Kayla Arucan totaled six saves, recording three each.
The Rangers move to 0-4 on the season. The team travels to Texas this weekend on the hunt for their first win before RMAC competition opens on September 26.
