DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Soccer team dominated Western Colorado University, 3-0, on Friday night at the Regis Turf Fields on Senior Night. The Rangers improve to 9-2-4 (5-1-3 RMAC) on the year, while the Mountaineers fall to 1-11-3 (1-4-3 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fernanda Rodriguez would take the first shots of the defensive first half, five minutes in. Elsa Nolen added an attempt before Rodriguez landed the first shot on goal of the match at 22:06. Natalie Bunch put a shot on goal six minutes later, but the Mountaineers recorded the final three shots of the half, but none were on goal.
"That game had a similar feeling to the previous two matches, where we just never really found our stride, and never were able to deliver a knockout punch," said head coach Jeff Frykholm. "Thankfully, it finally came together in the second half."
Both offenses would be much more prolific in the second half, starting with two shots on goal by bunch that were saved by Ashlyn Fitzpatrick, and a team save. Jordan Welsh recorded WCU's first shot on goal at 54:34, but that was saved by Kayla Arucan. After trading a variety of tries, including one by Western that hit the crossbar, Mya Pasion broke the stalemate with a goal assisted by Brooke Castillo. Arucan posted three more clutch saves, as Rodriguez added two late goals, one assisted by Elsa Nolen, and the other a solo score she took from midfield to pay dirt. One final save by Arucan sealed the 3-0 shutout win.
"Obviously Fernanda was huge tonight with two great goals," added Frykholm, "and of course, so very happy for Mya as she got her first goal in a Regis jersey tonight. That came at a really pivotal moment in the match, and allowed us to breathe a bit."
"That win was a big one just in terms of providing a bit of confidence in front of goal, as we are looking at two really difficult opponents in the next two games," concluded the HC. "It is going to be an exciting finish as we wrap up conference play in the next 10 days."
