DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Men's Soccer team, the No. 3 seed in the RMAC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament, fell to No. 2 Metropolitan State University of Denver on Wednesday night, 0-1, in the semifinal round of the RMAC Tournament. The Rangers fall to 9-6-4, while the Roadrunners improve to 10-4-5 and advance to the RMAC Championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers would control the time of possession early in the defensive first half, drawing a variety of fouls and forcing a few goal kicks. MSUD took the first shot of the game at 14:40, and that was quickly followed by a shot on goal by Jacobo Betancourt-Tovar that was saved by the Roadrunner keeper. It would be nearly 10 minutes until the next shot, taken by Jason Robles. Blaise Richard's shot in the 26th minute was nearly good, but a jumping Metro goalie was able to punch it out. After a wave of substitutions, MSUD managed another shot, and Betancourt-Tovar took his second try of the match, but the game went into the break tied, 0-0.
Blaise Richard took the first two shots of the second half, followed by one from Jan Grillitsch. MUSD would not attempt a try until the 59th minute. Robles landed another on target at 61:00, while the Roadrunners missed high. A pair of Metro corners proved fruitless, and Zach Jennings saved a shot just before the 73' mark. However, the Roadrunners took the lead on a shot from midfield that barely snuck over the hands of Jennings. Regis did not let up, taking three late shots, including one on goal, but ultimately lost, 0-1.
