DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team completed an 11-10 comeback win over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in an RMAC matchup on Thursday evening. The Rangers improve to 6-4 (4-1 RMAC), while the Mountain Lions drop to 6-3 (3-2 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter would belong to UCCS, as the Mountain Lions took three shots, two saved by Regis goalie Brigit Goetsch, before scoring the first goal of the game at 9:12. Goetsch then saved two back-to-back attempts from Colorado Springs, before allowing the second goal with 4:54 left in the period. Madeline Schallmoser and Justine Spahr both caused turnovers, and Alyse Valdez took the first shot of the game for RU, but it was saved, and the Mountain Lions quickly turned that into a score, leading 3-0 after one.
Becky Goetsch picked up a ground ball, then found Shea Murphy for the first Regis goal of the game, but UCCS quickly responded with another unassisted score. Lauren Sheets had two shots on target saved before scoring on a free position shot, but again, the Mountain Lions would have an answer. Kyla Bieker scored on a free position shot to bring the score to 3-5 going into the break.
UCCS scored first coming out of the break with a free position shot, but the Rangers tied the game with a quick 4-1 run, as Megan Bunker, Lauren Sheets, Aubrey Benton, and Bieker all scored within three minutes of one another. Sheets added one more woman-up score to end the third quarter with RU leading, 8-7.
Colorado Springs scored twice in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth, taking back the advantage, 9-8. After Bunker controlled the draw, Murphy evened the score at 9-9, and Ayla Cole would force a turnover that led to a Spahr goal. Less than a minute later, the Rangers took an 11-9 lead on a Murphy goal. With less than five minutes to go, the Mountain Lions brought the game back within one, but a late save and Cole forced turnover helped the Ranger ice the game and claim the 11-10 win.
