DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Baseball, receiving votes in the most recent NCBWA Top 25 Poll, team put together a Senior Day to remember on Sunday afternoon, defeating New Mexico Highlands University, 34-0. The Rangers improve to 30-14 (20-6 RMAC), while the Cowboys fall to 11-33 (2-25 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Clayton Conn reached first on a Cowboy error in the bottom of the first inning, Garrett Rede would be the first Ranger Senior of the day to hit a home run, putting Regis up, 2-0. RU got out of the second inning, as Maxim Fullerton threw out a runner at first from right field.
Peter Goldy would then lead off the bottom of the second with another Senior homer. Two singles later, Conn doubled to score CJ Difiglia, while Westin Miller scored on a passed ball. Adam Paniagua batted in two runs with a single to right field, tying the Regis single season record at 87. Ethan wood kept the momentum going with a double that drove in Fullerton and Paniagua, while Jack Moulin singled to bring home Wood. The final hit of the inning would be a two-RBI homer by Difiglia for the 12-0 lead.
Three quick outs later, Rede tripled, bringing home Conn, and was batted in by Fullerton's single. Goldy batted in two more runs with a double to right field, while Tanner Rice took a hit by pitch, which scored a run. Conn then sent a Senior Day grand slam to push the lead to 21-0.
Highlands was able to load the bases in the fourth, RU held, keeping the Cowboys scoreless. Rice's single scored both Nolan Johnson and Goldy in the bottom of the frame. The fifth inning saw seven more runs for the Rangers, coming from a Zach Barnao RBI single, a Rice two-RBI single, a Rede RBI hit by pitch, and a Paniagua three-RBI double, making him the new Ranger RBI king, and extending the lead to 30-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, two walks helped set up an RBI single from Rice. A bases loaded single by Rede brought home two runs, including Mason Ashcraft who was walked in his first career at bat. Sessing then took a bases-loaded walk, which batted in the 34th run of the game, a new Regis Baseball record.
GAME NOTES
· Regis set records for single-game runs scored, RBIs, and margin of victory. 26 hits is tied for third most all-time
· Paniagua is now also tied for the career-RBI record with 179
· Rice went 3-3 with six RBIs
· Rede also batted in six runs, going 3-5 at the plate
· Paniagua and Conn head five RBIs each on three hits
· All 14 Rangers with an at bat had a hit
· RU had 10 extra base hits
· Conn and Rede each had a stolen base
· Nick Jacobs (4-1) earned the win, while Andrew Rodriguez (1-7) took the loss. Eight Rangers took the mound, half notching at least one strikeouts
