Rangers Earn Two Home Opener Wins, Walk off Orediggers

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Baseball team collected two wins, 13-12, and 12-11, as they continued a non-conference series with Colorado School of Mines on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers improve to 4-3, while the Orediggers fall to 0-7.

GAME ONE

RU came out strong, as Grayson Headrick was walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning, and after stealing a base, was brought home by a Jack Moulin homer. CSM took back one run in the second inning with an RBI single, then led off the third with a solo homerun. They would then take their first lead of the game with a two-RBI single to left center.

Regis answered in the bottom of the frame as Linus Fleek singled, scoring Bobo Iandoli. However, the Orediggers kept rolling in the fourth after two walks and a bunt hit loaded the bases. From there, a balk, RBI fielder's choice, and a single brought in three runs, putting CSM up, 7-3. Grayson Wren sent a double to right center in the bottom half of the fourth, setting up an RBI for Kapono Nakanelua. immediately followed by an RBI single from George Smith.

The fifth inning saw one more run for Colorado School of Mines, scored on a balk, but three runs for Regis, including an RBI hit by pitch from Mason Pettingill, and a two-RBI single from Smith, bringing home Ethan Ralph and Ayden Harrison, tying the game at 8-8. The scoring continued into the sixth, as a Mines single brought in one run, and a sacrifice fly brought in a second. RU responded in a big way, with Moulin doubling and Ethan Wood reaching on an error, which allowed a pinch-hitting Steven Kirtidis to drive in two runs on a double. Parker Burt added an RBI single, while Harrison scored on Pettingill's sac bunt. The Orediggers scored one run on a lead-off homer in the seventh, but the comeback bid ended there.

GAME NOTES

·        Sam Fisher (1-0) earned the win, striking out one batter in .2 IP. Colter Wilson collected his first save of the season, while Joseph Steidel (0-1) recorded the loss

·        Jack Moulin led the Rangers, going 3-4, scoring two runs, and batting in two

·        Wren and Smith both posted two hits. Smith also batted in three runs

·        RU totaled four stolen bases.

GAME TWO

Regis started the second game even hotter than the first, with Iandoli and Moulin earning bases, and Wood launching a home run over right field. The defense retired three straight batters in the top of the second, including two strikeouts from Ryan Garcia, while in the bottom, Wood batted in two more runs on a single, and Pettingill nailed a two-out homer to go up 7-0.

RU didn't allow a hit in the top of the third, and extended their lead as Dylan Hearn scored on a Mines' error. However, CSM came out strong in the fourth, scoring an unearned run on a single, and adding two more on back-to-back RBI singles. With bases loaded and two outs, a single to center field brought in two more runs for the Orediggers. Regis got one back in the bottom of the fourth, with Wood being walked, reaching third after two more walks, and finally reaching home on an error.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Mines took the lead in the sixth, scoring runs on a triple, double, and single. Burt earned a base after being hit, and Robbie Peppell ran for him, stealing second and scoring on Wren's single to tie the game at 10-10. CSM took the lead with a lead-off homerun in the top of the seventh, and added an insurance run on an RBI fielder's choice. The Rangers' final chance saw a Pettingill and Harrison walked, setting up an RBI double for Dylan Perry, tying the game at 12-12. Smith then stepped up to the plate, and fired a ball to the warning track, securing the walk-off victory.

GAME NOTES

·        Wood posted three more hits, batting in five runs

·        Pettingill recorded two hits, bringing home two runs and scored two runs

·        Seven other Rangers added one hit Iandoli and Moulin both scored two runs

·        Owen Mounier (1-0) earned the win, while Grady Booth (0-1) recorded the loss

·        Garcia struck out four batters
