GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked #18 in the most recent IWLCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, won their fifth straight game on Wednesday evening, 10-5, over Colorado Mesa University. The Rangers improve to 8-4 (4-1 RMAC), while the Mavericks drop to 3-9 (2-3 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
CMU scored quickly after the opening draw, but then the game would face a 95-minute lightning delay. Out of the delay, Krista Munsinger forced a turnover that led to a Lexie Springman goal to tie the game. Munsigner quickly caused another turnover that led to another Ranger score, this time from a Maggie Schipfer free position shot. Evie Tanella won the ensuing draw, and Springman scored her second goal of the opening period.
Mesa scored first in the second quarter, and that would go on to be the only goal of the period. Brigit Goetsch saved back-to-back Maverick shots, while Tanella landed a pair of shots on target that were saved.
Munsinger controlled the opening draw of the second half, which led to Kyla Bieker finding the net to go up, 4-2. After Stella Geffre picked up the ground ball forced by Ayla Cole, Schipfer earned a free position shot and converted the goal. Munsinger continued to be a force on defense with another forced turnover, and after Geotsch saved the lone SOG by Mesa in the third, Schipfer scored on another free position shots, pushing the lead to 6-2.
Tanella assisted Aubrey Benton less than two minutes into the final quarter, but the Mavericks quickly answered, bringing the score to 7-3. Sophia Katnik won the draw, which led to a Rome Villani goal. Consecutive saves by Goetsch allowed Charlotte Hastings to pick up a ground ball, and Eva Searle scored her third goal of the season, assisted by Tanella. While Mesa scored back-to-back goals, Regis did not panic, and Springman scored the 10th goal of the game, securing the 10-5 win.
