DENVER, Colo – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse Team, ranked #19 in the most recent IWLCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, hosted Westminster University on Military and First Responder Appreciation Night. The Rangers defeated the Griffins 16-5, improving RU to 11-4 (7-1 RMAC), while WU falls to 7-4 (5-2 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers opened the game by capitalizing on a Griffin turnover forced by Abby Mays. Evie Tanella fired off an early shot that sailed wide, but Aubrey Benton quickly followed by finding the back of the net to get Regis on the board. Westminster responded with a goal of their own, but the Rangers answered right back. After a draw control from Elle Enselman, Tanella sparked the offense with a goal to shift momentum. Another draw control, this time by Krista Munsinger, led to a score from Kyla Bieker off an assist from Lexie Springman. Brigit Goetsch came up big defensively with back-to-back saves, setting up a highlight moment as Maggie Schipfer finished a behind-the-back goal off another assist from Springman to give the Rangers a 4-1 lead. Goetsch added another key save, and Tanella connected with Benton for her second goal of the night. Regis closed the first quarter in control, leading 5-1.
The Rangers carried that momentum into the second quarter, as Tanella struck just 45 seconds in. Stella Geffre secured a draw control that led to a goal from Springman, while Goetsch continued to dominate in net with her sixth save of the night. Benton extended the lead to 8-1, and Bieker delivered a perfectly placed pass to Schipfer for another smooth finish. Westminster managed back-to-back goals, but Regis maintained a strong 9-3 advantage. Tanella capped off the half with her third goal of the night, slipping a shot past the goalkeeper low, as the Rangers headed into halftime with a commanding 10-3 lead.
Benton continued her dominant performance, scoring her fourth goal of the game off an assist from Bieker. Westminster responded with back-to-back goals to cut into the deficit, bringing the score to 11-5. However, Regis answered right back as Benton struck again, extending the lead to 12-5 with just 15 minutes remaining.
Entering the fourth quarter, Tanella set up Schipfer for the opening goal of the period. Bieker then capitalized on a free-position opportunity, finding the back of the net to extend the Rangers' lead to 14-5. Westminster's Eva Searle responded with back-to-back goals, but Regis remained in control. Brigit Goetsch came up with consecutive saves in net to help preserve the Rangers' advantage as they closed out the game strong. Regis ultimately secured a 16-5 victory.
