GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University Baseball team battled Colorado Mesa, the No. 1 seed in the RMAC Tournament and the #1 ranked team in the latest NCBWA Top 25 Poll on Wednesday night. CMU pulled away late to defeat Regis, 12-10. The Rangers fall to 10-31-1, while the Mavericks improve to 46-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis started the game strong with back-to-back singles from Jack Moulin and Ethan Wood. Bobo Iandoli's double brought home Moulin, while Park Romney's single scored two more runs. Ayden Harrison then made it a 5-0 game with a home run to left field. Mesa got one run back with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the inning. They would then load the bases, and score two runs on a single through the left side. A passed ball brought the score to 5-4.
In the top of the second, Moulin led off with a double, and Wood homered over center field to go up, 7-4. Three straight CMU singles loaded the bases again, and they scored on a wild pitch. A fielder's choice scored one run, but the Rangers turned two on the play, going into the third, leading 7-6.
Dylan Perry singled in the top of the third, advancing Nicholai Arnold to second, while Moulin singled to bring him home. However, a solo home run kept the Mavericks within one. RU started the fourth with a pair of walks, and Harrison's double brought home Iandoli. An error from CMU allowed Park Romney to score with two outs. But again, the Mavericks had an answer, scoring on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
The fifth would be the first scoreless inning of the game, while Romney opened the sixth with a single. Neither team scored in the sixth either, while in the seventh, Mesa scored twice on a pair of runs. In the eighth, CMU extended their lead to 12-10. Arnold singled to lead off the final inning, but a double play ended the game there.
