ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team lost to No. 6 Rockhurst University (Mo.), 17-8, in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament on Thursday afternoon. The Rangers, who were ranked #19 in the final IWLCA Top 25 Poll, end the season 14-6, while the Hawks improve to 13-4 and advance to play No. 2 Maryville University in the second round.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks would score the first goal of the game, 30 seconds in. Evie Tanella would force an early turnover, while Brigit Goetsch would save a free position goal. Aubrey Benton and Maggie Schipfer both landed shots on goal before Benton got Regis on the board with a goal assisted by Lexie Springman. REG closed out the first with two more shots from Eva Searle and Kyla Bieker being saved, and ROCK took a 2-1 lead.
Beiker scored almost immediately in the second period, assisted by Springman, and Tanella followed that with a Schipfer assisted goal not much later. Springman assisted yet another goal, this time from Lauren Sheets, three minutes into the quarter to put the Rangers up, 4-2. Rockhurst stopped the run with two goals in a 30 second span to tie the game. Goetsch saved back-to-back shots, and Benton turned that into a goal assisted by Beiker. Schipfer closed out the half by converting a free position shot that put Regis up, 6-4.
While Goetsch saved an early shot and Abby Mays caused a turnover, but the Hawks took over from there, scoring five unanswered goals in the third, in a four-minute span where the Rangers did not posses the ball. Mays picked up a ground ball that turned into a Benton SOG, while Tanella laded a shot on target too, but the Rangers trailed after three, 9-6.
Rockhurst continued their momentum into the fourth, scoring the first five goals of the final period. Elle Enselman controlled a draw that led to a pair of shots from REG, and Benton ended the run with a score assisted by Springman. However, ROCK added three more scores beforeRegis was able to take control again. Schipfer ended the game with a score with one second left in the game, brining the final to 17-8.
