Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Rangers women's soccer team (7-7-2, 7-3-1 RMAC) clashed with the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (2-11-1, 2-7-1 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon. Regis trounced the Mountain Lions by a score of 4-1.
It was UCCS who got on the board first as a misplayed ball back to senior goalkeeper
Kat Crump fell short and allowed the Mountain Lions to score in the second minute of the game.
The Rangers were intent on leveling the score and 14 minutes after UCCS scored, redshirt-senior
Sade Akindele netted the equalizer, connecting with a header after freshman
Tori Rinsem crossed the ball into the box. Rinsem picked up the assist on the play.
Rinsem was only getting started as she picked up yet another assist in the second half when she helped beat the keeper and then left the ball for fellow freshman
Sofia Garcia to drill home for the 2-1 lead in the 67
th minute.
Junior
Mickie Piechowski got in on the action nine minutes later as she found herself at the end of a cross from junior defender
Maggie Saras. Piechowski slotted the ball past the keeper to extend the RU lead to two goals, 3-1, with only 15 minutes left in regulation.
Clinging to the 3-1 lead and fighting for one last late insurance goal Regis was awarded a free kick. Freshman
Emily Ramos stepped up to deliver a great ball only to have it deflected back to her for another cross. The ball sailed to the back post and sophomore
Annika Hills leaped and connected on a header, netting her first goal of the season, putting the Rangers ahead 4-1.
After all was said and done, RU finished the game on top 4-1 and improved to 7-3-1 in the conference. The defense was a major part of the success on the day as they combined to limit the visitors to only seven shots on the day (two on goal). Regis blasted 32 shots in the game, putting 11 on goal, while also dominating the corner kick battle 8-2.
Akindele, Piechowski, Garcia, and Hills all has one goal apiece. Rinsem tallied two assists in the game while Ramos and Saras pick up the other two. Crump earned her seventh win of the season and the Rangers picked up a very important win. There is now only one game between the women's soccer team and the end of the season Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament.
The win helped today, but the final game against cross-town rival Metropolitan State University-Denver (7-4-4, 6-3-2 RMAC) is crucial for the team as they are still fighting for positions in the tournament. The team will go head to head with the Roadrunners next Sunday, October 30 at 1:30 p.m. on the Regis Match Pitch.
