Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Regis University women's soccer team (4-6-2, 4-3-1 RMAC) made their way to New Mexico Highlands University (2-8-1, 2-5 RMAC) to face the Cowgirls on Sunday afternoon and came away with a 4-1 victory after 90 minutes.
Once the game was underway both teams settled into their own as they each fought for shot opportunities. Regis put up the strongest defensive effort of the two as they prevented NMHU from taking many shots. In the 24
th minute the referee awarded the home team a penalty kick and they capitalized scoring the first goal of the game.
Minutes later, as the game was nearing the 30
th minute, the Rangers responded with a goal of their own as defensive captain junior
Maggie Saras connected on her first goal of the season as fellow junior
Akina Fujimoto picked up the assist.
The score remained tied as the teams broke for halftime, and when RU came back on the field, they were on a mission to pick up the victory.
By controlling possession and limiting any opportunities for the opponents, Regis was able to put pressure on the Cowgirls. In the 67
th minute it was the Rangers who were awarded a penalty kick. Junior
Caelyn Hirschman stepped up and drilled her second goal of the season.
RU was not finished there as they continued to push the pace, leading to another goal in the 81
st minute as senior
Maison O'Neill sent a free kick into the box where junior
Mickie Piechowski was waiting to put Regis up 3-1. The final nail in the coffin came eight minutes later as freshman
Tori Rinsem netter her team-leading sixth goal of the year after receiving a pass from senior Cat Anger who picked up the assist on the play.
Next up for the women's soccer team is a match with conference opponent Black Hills State University (1-10, 0-6 RMAC) on October 14 at 1 p.m. in Spearfish, South Dakota. Following that game, the ladies will return home for a Tuesday game against #7 Colorado School of Mines and Technology Orediggers (11-1, 6-1 RMAC) on October 18 at 3:30 p.m.
