Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team (0-0-1) hosted their 2016 season opener on Thursday night against Midwestern State University (0-0-1) and came away with a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes of play.
Both teams battled the entire game, pushing each other to the limit in the first match of the year for either team. MSU scored the first goal of the game in the 26
th minute off a cross from the right side that found the head of a Mustang attacker, beating the goalkeeper and giving the visitors a 1-0 lead early.
The resiliency of Regis shined brightly as redshirt-senior collected a ball on the attacking side of the field, taking a shot, sending the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at one goal apiece. Persistent attacking in the first half undoubtedly led to Akindele's opportunity as the ball spent a majority of the time in the offensive half for the Rangers.
MSU took another lead in the 73
rd minute as a loose ball found the foot of a Mustang who slotted the ball into the goal for their second lead of the game. RU was determined to strike back as they continued to push the pace, sending shots at the visiting goalkeeper, forcing her to make save after save.
With less than four minutes to go in regulation, junior
Mickie Piechowski took a pass from fellow junior
Caelyn Hirschman, finessing her shot attempt past the diving goalkeeper to knot the game up at two.
The score remained tied at the end of regulation and both teams headed into overtime with a sense of urgency. The sun was setting and each team was looking to score the game-winning goal.
Late in the first half of overtime, Akindele launched a shot from outside the box, tipping off the goalkeeper's fingers, careening off the post, and back into the hands of the goalkeeper before it could cross the goal line. That was the best opportunity that either team could muster, settling for a 2-2 tie at the end of two overtime periods.
Regis outshot their opponent 30-10, putting 13 shots on goal to six for MSU. Each team took five corner kicks, the Mustangs were called offside on four occasions, and senior
Kat Crump (0-0-1) made four crucial saves on the day.
The women's soccer team will return to action this Saturday as they play host to Texas Woman's University at noon on the Regis Match Pitch. Following this game, the team will head out west to face two California based teams in UC-San Diego on Friday, September 9 and Cal State-San Bernardino on Sunday September 11.
