Box Score DENVER, Colo. – With two wins under their belt in the first two games of 2016, the Regis University men's soccer team (3-0-0) faced off with California State University-East Bay (2-2-0) remaining undefeated and extending their shutout streak to three games to start 2016.
Although their defense has been the biggest factor to their victories this season, the Regis offense has not been far behind, notching goals in each of the last two games, including two in the first game of the season.
The Rangers got the scoring started in this one with a penalty kick in the 18
th minute. Sophomore
Noah Chapleski stepped up and drilled the ball into the net to give RU a 1-0 lead early on. Neither team would give an inch the rest of the first half and Regis would take their one goal lead into halftime.
Defensively, the Rangers did their job to near perfection, preventing any of the Pioneer shots from reaching their target on three shots in the first half. The second half started with Chapleski looking to create an even larger lead as he took a shot that sailed wide right minutes into the second half. The team would continue to press and get open looks.
Both teams fought and grinded for the full 45 minutes of the second half that ended scoreless which gave RU the 1-0 victory. Sophomore
Chase Webert (2-0-0) picked up the win as he started the game, and senior
Ciaran Gibson came in for the second half picking up the lone save for Regis. The Rangers finished with 12 shots, five on goal, three corner kicks, and most importantly the only goal of the game.
Next up, the men's soccer team will return to Colorado for their conference opening games on the road against Adams State University on September 16 at 1 p.m. and Fort Lewis College on September 18 at 2:30 p.m.
