DENVER - The No. 12 Regis University men's basketball team's (14-2,9-1 RMAC) 14-game win streak was snapped at the hands of the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (15-7,9-4 RMAC), Saturday night at the Regis Field House. Four players scoring in double-digits wasn't quite enough for the team to win their 15th straight game, which a Regis team hasn't done since 1949.
How it Happened: The Rangers led the Mavericks by as much as 13 points in the first half after a 18-6 RU run. With Regis up 36-23 and five minutes to play in the first frame, CMU took off on a 17-7 run of their own to close the gap and the half. Graduate student guard
Brian Dawson drilled a triple just before the first 20 minutes came to a close, but Mesa was within striking distance at 40-43, Regis.
In the final frame, the Mavs opened with another run. This time, it was a 12-0 sprint that had RU on their toes and trailing, 43-52, before the first media timeout. With the game winding down, Regis kept fighting to come back, but the high-powered Mesa offense was too much for the Rangers. The Mavericks ended the second half shooting 67 percent (16-24) from the field and an impressive 75 percent (6-8) from the three. When the dust settled, Regis fell to Colorado Mesa, 86-80.
Game Notes: Regis' bench produced 25 points compared to Mesa's 17.
Dawson (8-21 FG, 3-8 3-PT) led the team with 19 points. The guard also got four assists and three steals.
Freshman forward
Brayden Carter (6-7 FG, 1-1 3-PT) broke his career-high in points in the first half alone. In total, Carter got 16 points plus five boards and a block in his career night.
Graduate student guard
Troy Brady (5-9 FG, 4-6 3-PT) added 15 points.
Junior guard
Will Cranston-Lown (6-12 FG, 1-4 3-PT) was all over the place with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers will have a short break before action ramps back up against the Adams State Grizzlies (9-8,5-6 RMAC) on Jan. 28. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. in Alamosa.
