DENVER - The Regis University baseball team (3-5-1, 0-0 RMAC) finished their four-game series with the Minot State Beavers (3-4), Sunday at the Regis Baseball Field. The Rangers settled for a doubleheader split as they took the opener by a margin of 8-7 in walk-off fashion, but slipped in the closer.
Game One | How it Happened: Minot State opened the first inning with a solo homer with sophomore
Dylan De Leon on the mound. But RU answered quickly in the second when junior
Colten Chase's RBI double leveled the game at 1-1.
Then in the third, sophomore
Braxton Boyle batted in senior
Miguel Marquez to give the Rangers their first lead of the day.
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Regis tied the game again when graduate student
Andy Beyene drilled a RBI double to left center. Following that, Marquez batted in Beyene on a single.
But the Beavers put another three runs eighth, putting the Rangers in another deficit. However, for the third time, RU tied the game up. Chase got it going with a sac fly, then redshirt sophomore
Trey Harrison's two RBI single evened the game at 7-7.
In the bottom of the ninth with two outs and Boyle in scoring position, sophomore
Levi Padilla did his job and batted in Boyle, ending the game and sealing the win.
Game Notes: The Rangers scored eight runs off nine hits and had no errors.
Chase was a perfect 2-2 in the box and had two RBI.
Marquez was 2-4 and had a RBI.
Harrison had two RBI.
Freshman
Zach Daudet had a game-high five assists.
Junior
Matt Marlow had a game-high 13 putouts.
Game Two | How it Happened: The closer started very well for the Rangers. Senior
Justin Kleinsorge rang up nine batters and the offense scored four unanswered runs.
With RU up 6-2 after a two RBI bomb from Marlow, things stopped going Regis' way in the sixth. From the sixth to the ninth inning, the Beavers scored seven-straight runs, giving them a 9-6 advantage.
The previously hot Ranger bats cooled down significantly as RU didn't have a hit after the fifth inning. In the end, the Rangers fell 6-9.
Game Notes: RU had six runs, nine hits and one error.
Marlow was 3-4 and had a team-high three RBI.
Chase and graduate student
Roger Riley each were 2-4 while Riley had a RBI plus 11 putouts.
Marquez was a perfect 2-2.
Up Next for the Rangers: RU will take a road trip to Kansas this coming weekend where they'll face Fort Hays State (0-8).
