Peoples nets a career-high seven goals, Rangers roll in RMAC opener against UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The No. 9 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team opened the RMAC season in style on Monday, rolling to an 18-4 victory over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at Mountain Lion Stadium.

Monday's matinee featured two of the top-three teams in the RMAC Coaches' Preseason Poll and the seventh all-time meeting between the Rangers (2-0 overall, 1-0 RMAC) and Mountain Lions (0-2 overall, 0-1 RMAC); all won by Regis dating back to the 2017 season.

"UCCS is always strong, really competitive and I think we see a lot of their best games, so we wanted to be ready for that," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "I'm really pleased with our team performance. I thought we played very solid end-to-end. Our goalies were fantastic, obviously our finishers were very strong (Monday), and we did a lot of great work in the midfield, as well."

Leading the way for the Rangers was their All-American graduate student Kyleigh Peoples as the two-time defending RMAC Attacker of the Year netted a career-high seven goals and an assist on eight shot attempts. Her previous career-high of six goals also came against UCCS back on April 7, 2018.

The seven goals by Peoples is tied for the third highest single-game performance in program history, just two goals shy of the record held by Chrissy Yetter (9) accomplished on March 9, 2006 against Lee's McRae College.

"Kyleigh is a special player. She plays incredibly fluid and I thought she made some tremendous dodges to cage. And the things that don't show up in the stats is how well she opens up space for other people, how she distributes the ball and her calmness," Kellner said. "I thought she played with an excited energy today and I didn't even know until the game was over how many goals she scored. She did so many other things well."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers came out ready from the opening draw as they jumped out to an 8-1 lead through the game's opening 15 minutes. Peoples got the ball rolling as she sparked a would-be 7-0 scoring run for Regis to open the game at the 11:42 mark with a free position goal; one of her three first quarter scores.

Fellow graduate student Hannah Krats would follow with the first of her two goals on the afternoon at the 10:06 mark. Junior midfielder Bailey Truex, who had a career performance of her own with four goals, as well as sophomore midfielder Lily Ferguson and freshman Madeline Schallmoser all added early tallies to balloon the Rangers' lead out to 7-0 with 3:24 remaining in the first quarter.

"With quarters being new this year, that can really change momentum. You can finish a quarter strong then go out cold the next and that kind of happened to us in the preseason and our first game," Kellner said. "Something we really focused on (Monday) was dominating each quarter and I thought we did that. That first quarter really set us up."

Trailing by nine early in the second quarter, the Mountain Lions tried to mount a comeback as they struck for three straight goals to climb back within six (10-4) with 5:44 remaining in the first half.

That would be the closest UCCS would inch, though, as Regis slammed the door over the final 30 minutes and change, scoring eight unanswered goals to put a bow on the 18-4 final.

GAME NOTES: Regis out-shot the Mountain Lions, 32-18, and were a spotless 15-for-15 on clear attempts.

The Rangers won the turnover battle, 20-15, and caused 11 turnovers as a team, led by senior defender Maya Quigley with three.

Senior defender Sydney Landdeck paced all Rangers with three ground balls, while the trio of Krats, graduate student Sarah Kate Dhom and junior Sarah Hanson each finished with two ground balls.

In net, freshman goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch picked up her second win of the season, finishing with five saves in her 45 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte stopped all three shots she faced in the fourth quarter.

KEY STATISTICS: The Rangers earned free position opportunities early and often Monday, shooting seven of their 11 free position attempts in the first quarter. As a team, Regis capitalized for eight free position goals while the Mountain Lions were 0-for-3 on the afternoon.

UP NEXT: Regis will head east for a non-conference clash against the University of Tampa (1-1 overall) out of the Sunshine State Conference, scheduled for 5 p.m. (Mountain Time) next Tuesday, March 1. The Rangers defeated the Spartans in the only previous matchup between the two teams (20-19 OT) back on March 1, 2019 in Denver.

"I anticipate another high-scoring game. They have a tremendous offense and we have great scorers too," Kellner said. "We're excited to get out of the snow with another blizzard coming, so it'll be nice to get to Florida. The trip is during our Spring Break, so it's a really good time to get away, have some team bonding and play a really competitive game in Tampa."
