Ten different players score to lead No. 11 Rangers to 17-6 victory over McKendree and first win on new turf field

DENVER, Colo. — Playing on the freshly turfed surface of the team's new field, the No. 11 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team christened its new home with a dominating 17-6 victory Tuesday afternoon against non-conference foe McKendree University.

Regis improved to 4-0 overall with the victory and 6-0 all time against the visiting Bearcats (3-4 overall).

"Everyone was really excited to open up on the new turf field. We got to practice on it yesterday and I thought our girls played tremendous end to end," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "Both goalies played well for us and our defense made big steps to help us transition, which was one of the things we've been working on. We want to push the ball in transition and look to score fast break goals. We had a lot of fast break opportunities (Tuesday). They didn't all result in goals, but it was something great to build on."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers offense was plenty potent in transition or settled in the attacking end as they finished the afternoon with a 37-25 shots advantage against McKendree and converted 17-of-24 shots on goal.

They opened the game with a 4-0 scoring run by four different goal scorers in senior midfielder Lucy Johnson, senior attacker Alexis Parker, junior midfielder Bailey Truex and graduate student Hannah Krats through the opening 7:31 of the first quarter.

It was a sign of things to come for the Rangers as they'd outscore the Bearcats, 9-1, in the second quarter to blow the game open behind a balanced attack that saw 10 different Regis players score at least one goal, led by Johnson's four goals; tied for her career high previously set on March 1, 2020 against Concordia-St. Paul.

Sophomore attacker Tia Krats, who netted 23 goals as a freshman last spring, notched her first three goals of the 2022 campaign on Tuesday, as well, while graduate student Kyleigh Peoples and Parker each added two goals apiece to lead the Rangers offense.

Sophomore midfielder Lily Ferguson, who led all players with five draw controls, as well as junior Gabby Rothermund, freshman Madeline Schallmoser and junior Tara Davis all added one goal apiece to round out the Regis goal scorers.

"We had great ball movement and played with a dynamic offense in that second quarter," Kellner said. "Our team has tremendous shooters and we're a really deep offense with our starters and throughout our bench. I think through the course of the season, we're going to see a lot of different people put up points."

Between the pipes, sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte was sensational as she stopped a career-high seven saves and tied a career high with six ground balls en route to earning her first victory of the season.

She and fellow goalkeeper, freshman Brigit Goetsch, are now a combined 4-0 with a miniscule 7.16 goals against average through the team's first four games.

"Elizabeth played huge and she was really aggressive. I think she saw the ball well, her hands were moving fast, and her positioning was fantastic," Kellner said. "I'm really comfortable and happy that we have two strong goalkeepers, one a right and one a lefty, that allows us to throw something different at our opponents."

GAME NOTES: Regis finished with a 16-13 edge in the turnover battle and were 15-for-19 in clear attempts on Tuesday compared to 14-for-17 for McKendree.

The Rangers dominated the draw control category (18-8). The 18 draw controls are the most for Regis since racking up 22 draws last May 7 in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals against Fort Lewis College.

"The chemistry with our draw team I think is one of our strengths. They can communicate and Gaby (Rothermund) can put the ball pretty much where she wants it," Kellner said. "She knows her teammates are going to be able to go win the ball on the ground more often than not."

UP NEXT: The Rangers will have a quick turnaround as they jump back into RMAC play at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday with a home game against Colorado State University Pueblo (0-3 overall, 0-0 RMAC).

Wednesday'c contest will be the second of three games on the schedule this week for Regis as the team will also welcome in Rockhurst University for a non-conference game scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.

"It's certainly difficult to play back-to-back. We're going to hit the ice baths, refuel and regroup," Kellner said. "We got to see CSU Pueblo during the preseason and they're a fast, athletic team capable of seeing gaps in our defensive end. So we need to do a good job closing those, sending the help early and do similar things to what we did (Tuesday) like winning draw controls and playing strong end to end."
